Dr. Edgerton Haskell Hart, B:5/18/1868, was the second son of Dr. Virgil Chittenden Hart and Adeline Gilliland Hart, in Kiukiang (Jiujiang), Jiangxi, China. Edgerton grew up in Kiukiang knowing Mary Stone (doctor) - Wikipedia, and Ida Kahn - Wikipedia. After he attended University of Toronto 1887-1889 and received his medical degree from University of the City of New York in 1892. Edgerton did his internship at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in New Jersey 1892-1893.
On 7/20/1893, Dr Edgerton Haskell Hart married Rose Munn in Hamilton, Ontario. The end of 1893 the Hart's are in Soochow (Sozhou), Fujian, worked at a hospital/dispensary. Daughter Rose Adelaide Hart was born 6/29/1894.
In 1895 the Hart's spent the summer in Guling, Jiangxi - Wikipedia, learning Chinese, while developing the community into the Mission retreat it became known for. In August 1895, Edgerton responded to the call for rescue volunteers for the Kucheng massacre - Wikipedia
In November 1895 Edgerton received word to go to Wuhu, where he hoped and made Director of the Wuhu General Hospital (renamed Ichisan Pheasant Hill). Dr VC Hart had bought the property and built the hospital in 1877.
Dr. EH Hart preformed many surgeries, having only ether, chloroform and cocaine as amnestic. There was a case of man who jumped off a bridge under the influence of opium. He then slit his throat while in the hospital, He later removed the stitches by pawing at them leaving only mangled flesh, which further stitches were not feasible. He died several days later from shock/exposure of the self-inflected wound.
In April 1896 the Hart's entertain a couple from the USA, who are riding bikes around the world. 7/18/1896 Dorethea Mansell Hart was born. In October 1896, Edgerton returns to Kiukiang for the first time since age eleven.
On 10/221897, Edgerton Haskell Hart Jr was born.
Second son Wellington Jackson Hart was born 10/1/1900 in Hamilton, Ontario, while on furlough. Edgerton did postgraduate work in New York till May 1901.
In April 1903, Dr Mary Stone visited the Wuhu General Hospital to observe Edgerton during surgery. 8/17/1903 third son Virgil Chittenden Hart was born in Kuling. On December 8th 1903, Rose was in intense pain, due to dislocation of her kidney, after moving the piano to clean behind it.
2/27/1904 Edgerton receives a letter from Caroline Maddock, accepting the job as a Mission Nurse. She arrives in October and pressed into service as Rose's personal nurse. They travel by steamer to Shanghai were Rose is operated on. On January 10, 1905 the two sail for San Francisco arriving 2/2/1905. They travel to Baltimore John Hopkins Hospital. Caroline Maddock travels to see family/friends in Canada before returning to Wuhu in late 1905. Rose Munn dies 3/12/1905 and Edgerton takes Ed Jr on a round the world trip, arriving back in Wuhu 11/16/1905.
The summer of 1906 Caroline Maddock is in Kuling and letters between her and Edgerton state an affection for one another. On 1/16/1907 Edgerton proposes. They are married at Dr. Stuart's home (1st president of University of Nanking. The Hart's go on a honeymoon one months sail along the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake; where a typhoon and pirates were encountered.
Carolyn Estella Hart was born 12/111908, the same date as her mother, Caroline Maddock Hart.

4/13/1913 Dr Edgerton Haskell Hart dies from Typhus.
