Fayan Wenii (b. 885 , d. 958 , Ch.法眼文益, pinyin Fǎyǎn Wenyi ; Kor. 법안 문익 Pǒban Munik ; jap. Hogen Buneki ; Wiet. Phap Nhan Văn them ) - the founder of the Fayan school, also known as Qingliang Wenyi (清凉文益).
Life and work
[edit]Fayan was born in Hangzhou and entered the monastery at the age of 7 and practiced under Zen master Quanwei. He studied the Confucian classics. He was ordained a monk at the age of 20 at Kaiyuan Temple in Yuezhou (now the city of Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province). While on pilgrimage with other monks, Fayan and his friends were caught in a snowstorm and took refuge at the Dizang Monastery. Luohan Guichen, also known at Dizang. Fayan's encounter with Dizang is recorded in The Transmission of the Lamp. After studying with Dizang for some time Fayan received Dharma transmission and taught at Chongshou Monastery in Linchuan
