(Depths of Dungeons) Draft. (Still needs to be formatted correctly.)
Depths of Dungeons is a free text adventure series created by Desk of Steel. The games are typically composed of puzzle solving, timed "action" gameplay, and strange stories.
Setting
Depths of Dungeons is set in a fantasy medieval world. NPCs include Dennis the peasant, the Squirrel, and two knights. Green slime and dirt are also frequently seen.
Depths of Dungeons I
The first game has much more of a focus on puzzles than Depths of Dungeons II. Until the last room the player is allowed to backtrack, and many of the puzzles require backtracking. The interface has lime text on a black background in the first game.
Depths of Dungeons II
The second game in the series has much more of a focus on "action". According to the developer, the game attempts to push the text adventure genre past its limits. One section involves a pogo stick and an abyss. However, puzzles are still frequent. The story also develops more and becomes a little more serious.
To even start the second game, the player is required to answer three questions involving the first game.
Simple 2D graphics were planned for part of the game, but the idea was eventually scrapped. The source code still has a small remnant of this, but it never comes up in the game.
Depths of Dungeons III
Although work has not yet begun on it, a third game is planned in the series. Desk of Steel has said that the third game will have a more creative way to ensure that the first two games were finished before the player is able to play Depths of Dungeons III.
Name
At first the series was named DungeonQuest, but because other games named DungeonQuest and Dungeon Quest existed the name was changed. DungeonVenture was tried for a short time, but it too was scrapped and a contest was started to find the next name. Currently the contest is still underway.
Contests
There have been two contests started by Desk of Steel for the small group of players. The first was a race to beat all three games. The prize was $5 cash and a "certificate of genius". Although the third game has not yet been released, the prize was thought to be safe (after all, the first game was so hard nobody had beaten it yet).
The second contest was one to name the series. This contest too has not yet been beaten. The prize for this contest was a clue on how to beat the last room of the first game.
