Alison Ramsdell was born and raised in[1] Flandreau, South Dakota. [2] She still resides in Flandreau, South Dakota with her husband and two sons.

Education

Allison Ramsdell graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Valparaiso University in 2008. There Ms. Ramsdell majored in International Economics, Public Relations and Spanish. Ms. Ramsdell also minored in Business Administration.

While in law school, Ramsdell worked for the Citizens' Lawyer Program, published for the Iowa Law Review, and served at the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence/MUNA Legal Clinical[3]

Ms. Ramsdell then went off to earn her J.D from University of Iowa College of Law, graduating in 2011.[4]

Ramsdell worked at Murphy, Goldammer & Prendergast in Sioux Falls Law Firm after graduation. She went on to work as a law clerk for the Honorable Karen E. Schreier at the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota, where she mostly dealt with pro se cases[5].

Occupation

Alison J. Ramsdell is the 44th United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. Ms. Ramsdell was sworn in by U.S District Judge Roberto A. Lange on April 21st, 2022, with her appointment taking effect on April 22nd, 2022. [6] As the U.S Attorney for the District of South Dakota, Ms. Ramsdell will be leading the office responsible for prosecuting federal crimes and protecting the people and interests of the United States within the district of South Dakota also known as the Civil RIghts Division. Ms. Ramsdell will hold this position until the vacancy is filled by a Presidentially appointed and Senate confirmed nominee.[7]

Civil Rights Division

In direct collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. This section works to uphold the civil and constitutional rights of all South Dakotans, more times than not it's the people that are most vulnerable.[8] The Civil Rights Division of South Dakota allows for opportunity and justice for all residents despite their race, sex, disability, or religion.

Activism

Alison J. Ramsdell has served in the U.S Attorney's Office since September 2014, serving as an Assistant U.S Attorney of the District's Civil Division. In 2016 Ms. Ramsdell was selected to lead the Civil Rights Section of South Dakota.[9] While in the District's Civil Rights Section Ms. Ramsdell's focus was directed towards housing discrimination, voting rights, hate crimes, and the enforcement of American With Disabilities Act. Ms. Ramsdell also anticipated more attention on LGBT issues, championing Trans Rights during a particularly divided time where conservatives were pushing Anti-Trans Legislation.[10]

Confronting Anti-LGBTQ+ harassment in school:

This sector allows protection to all public and secondary schools, as well as public and private colleges and universities. Responsible to investigate all cases involving discrimination.

Employment Discrimination:

This sector allows for protection to all cases that come from discrimination within the workplace. zero bias of employment involving race, gender, or religion. Housing Discrimination:

The Fair House Act prohibits discrimination in the sale or rental of housing on the basis of race, religion, sex, national origin, familial status or disability.

Criminal Violations

Deprivation of rights under color of law: It is a crime for a person acting under color of law, including local, state or federal government officials, to willfully deprive a person of a right or privilege protected by the constitution.

Freedom of access to Clinic entrances:

The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances law makes it unlawful for a person to use force, treat of force, or physical obstruction to intentionally injure or intimidate a person because he/she is or has been obtaining or providing health services

Hate Crime:

Include all acts of physical harm and specific criminal threats motivated based of race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability

Human trafficking:

Human Trafficking includes forced labor, domestic servitude, and commercial sex trafficking.[11]
