Draft essay: WP:Adminstrators are a big deal

nutshell|While being an administrator should not be a big deal, in practice it is

Let's face facts: being an administrator is a very big deal. It isn't supposed to be, but it is.

We all know how it is supposed to be. It comes up frequently during Requests for Adminship. A candidate faces objections, perhaps the discussion gets heated, some someone points out that there's no reason to be quite so stuffy about things. After all, Being an administroar is "no big deal."

There is truth to that. In theory. The "History" section of WP:ADMINISTRATORS has a shortcut called "WP:NOBIGDEAL. It quotes Jimmy Wales as saying tin 2003 "that becoming a sysop is 'not a big deal.'" The policy goes on to say "Stated simply, while the correct use of the tools and appropriate conduct should be considered important, merely "being an administrator" should not be." (Emphasis added).

"Should not be." But it is.
