Anthony Rotondo

[edit]

Anthony Rotondo (1957- ) is a former capo in the DeCavalcante family of New jersey. Rotondo turned informant in 1999 after nearly the entire hierarchy of the family was arrested.

Early life

[edit]

Anthony Rotondo lived with his father Jimmy "the gent" Rotondo, his father expressed wishes for his son to become a lawyer, and Rotondo didn't start down the mob path until later in life. Rotondo graduated from the Nazareth High School, and earned a business degree from St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York before becoming associated with the mafia.

life in the mafia

[edit]

Although Anthony Rotondo's father said he didn't want his son to become involved with organized crime Rotondo's father eventually proposed his son to be "made". Rotondo was in his fathers "crew" until 1988 when Jimmy "the gent" Rotondo was found in his car dead with a bottle of rotting fish in his lap over some unspoken rule he had broken, the significance of the fish was never made clear. Anthony Rotondo then took over his fathers position as capo in the DeCavalcante family. Rotondo admitted to having played a part in four murders, that of John D'Amato, Fred Weiss, Fat Louis LaRusso, and Joey Garafano. John D'Amato was killed because he was a homosexual, Fred Weiss was killed because he was an anti crime crusader and the family wanted to be put back on the map by John Gotti, Fat Louis LaRasso was killed because John D'Amato (acting boss at the time) was afraid Larusso would try to pull of a coup, and Joey Garafano was killed because when he was assigned to drive a "crash car" during the murder of Fred Weiss (a "crash car" is a car that was supposed to crash into any police cars coming to the scene) he stole license plates of another mobsters wife, and so the mobster was the first one questioned about the murder Although playing a part in 4 murders Rotondo never pulled the trigger, according to long time soldier Anthony Capo, Whenever there was dirty work to be done Rotondo couldn't be found, but as soon as it was time to count the cash you could count on him to be there. Capo went onto say that respect was a problem with Rotondo and not many people respected him

John D'Amato

[edit]

After John Riggi was sent to prison in 1991 John D'Amato said he was taking over indicating he had the support of John Gotti and other members of New York. However after D'Amato got into an argument with his girlfriend (who was also seeing Rotondo at the time) she went to Rotondo and told him that D'Amato had taken her to a sex club and they would swap partners and D'Amato would have sex with men. This upset Rotondo a great deal, he then went and told other members of the family that D'Amato was a homosexual. Anthony Capo was then told to kill D'Amato, he testified that D'Amato hopped in his car and said "let's go eat" Capo then said he shot D'Amato twice in the head, and when he didn't die he shot him twice more.

indictments

[edit]

In 1999 Anthony Rotondo along with nearly the entire hierarchy of the family was indited. Rotondo was indited for home invasions, holdups, four murders and three conspiracy to commit murders, if convicted Rotondo would certainly be sentenced to life, and possibly death because of Rudolph Giuliani's tough anti crime stance so Rotondo became an informant.

Time as an informant

[edit]

Rotondo testified at the trials of: Stefano Vitable (the Consigilere of the family) Phillip Abramo ( capo in the family) Giuseppe "pino" Schifilliti Frederico "Fritzi" Giovanelli and Peter Gotti. Rotondo testified about the homicides of Fred Weiss, Louis LaRusso, John D'Amato and Joesph Garafano. Rotondo also testified about the "pump and dump" scam at SC&T International in which investors were bilked out of millions of dollars. At the trail of Frederico "Fritzi" Giovanelli Rotondo testified that he had given information to Rotondo that one of their soldiers were cooperating with the government and that they were about to be indited. Rotondo also testified one of the reasons he had become an informant was because he had become increasingly disheartened over the way his father was gunned down.
