About Me

[edit]

I am a science communicator, educator, and working scientist at the School of Life Sciences, Arizona State University, with a long history of developing pre-K-12 educational content. I am also a lifelong artist who works with traditional materials as well as digital technology.

My Work

[edit]

I have been a faculty member at the School of Life Sciences (SOLS) for over 37 years and have held multiple positions. I created and developed the Ask A Biologist program and The Paper Project. For over 27 years, I have been developing K-12 web content and running teacher workshops, known as Dr. Biology’s Imaginative Classroom, in collaboration with the Arizona Science Center and local school districts. I designed and built Grass Roots Studio (GRS), which is involved with the internationally distributed audio program, Ask A Biologist which is a companion piece to the Ask A Biologist website and YouTube channel.

Ask A Biologist

[edit]

Established in 1997, Ask A Biologist connects students, teachers, and parents with working scientists. The website has answered over 45,000 questions and won several awards for its content. It receives over 30 million visitors annually and more than 120,000 PDF content downloads yearly.

Paper Project

[edit]

Launched in 1999, the Paper Project explores the structure and beauty of paper, blending science and art. It includes a traveling tactile art exhibit, immersive 3D performance pieces, and a dance performance, alongside a range of educational content.

Grass Roots Studio

[edit]

Built in 2007, Grass Roots Studio is part of the School of Life Sciences at ASU. It primarily produces the Ask A Biologist show, available on most streaming services.

Art Work

[edit]

Combining science and art, I create works based on exploring the unseen, hoping to inspire others to enjoy these explorations as well.

Passion for Open Access

[edit]

As an educator and communicator, I believe it is important that we share work as openly as possible, while still retaining ownership. Creative Commons has been invaluable for many of my projects. As an artist, I am also open to sharing content whenever possible. Here are images that I have shared on Wikimedia.
