Christian J. Wiedermann, M.D.
[edit]Christian Josef Wiedermann (born December 20, 1954, in Molzbichl, Austria) is an Austrian physician and university professor of Internal Medicine. He is a specialist in Internal Medicine with additional specializations in Clinical Pharmacology and Intensive Care Medicine. Most recently, he served as Medical Director of Tirol Kliniken LLC, which operates the regional hospitals in Tyrol, including the University Hospital of Innsbruck (Austria).
Early life, education and career
[edit]Wiedermann graduated from the Marianum High School in Tanzenberg, Carinthia (Austria) in 1973 and studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck from 1973 to 1982. In Innsbruck, he trained as an internist, clinical pharmacologist and intensive care physician, and received diplomas in geriatrics and psychosomatic medicine. He completed his training as a specialist in internal medicine in 1991. His additional specializations in clinical pharmacology and intensive care medicine were completed in 1995 and 1998, respectively. He received the venia docendi in 1991 with his habilitation on neuro-immuno-endocrine interactions. He was appointed as a university professor by the President of Austria in 1996.
From 1985 to 1986, Wiedermann conducted research abroad as a Max Kade Fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, with Candace Pert, the discoverer of the opiate receptor, and in 1990 as part of the Fogarty International Research Fellowship Program in the Department of Geriatrics at Weill Cornell Medical College, New York.
From 1994 to 2003, Dr. Wiedermann was the Managing Senior Physician of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital of Innsbruck, and from 2001 to 2003, he was also the Deputy Head of the Clinical Department of General Internal Medicine at the University Hospital. From 2004 to 2017, he was Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Central Hospital of Bolzano in South Tyrol, Italy.[1] From 2013 to 2014, Wiedermann was president of the "Vital Foundation" for health promotion of the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol,[2] and from 2016 to 2017, he served as scientific director of the Claudiana College of Health Professions in Bolzano (Italy).[3] From 2017 until his retirement in 2020, he was the medical managing director of Tirol Kliniken LLC in Innsbruck.[4]
Currently, Wiedermann is an associate researcher at the Institute for Public Health, Medical Decision Making, and HTA at the UMIT TIROL Private University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics, and Technology in Tyrol and coordinator of research projects at the Institute for General Medicine and Public Health[5] at the Claudiana College of Health Professions in South Tyrol.
Scientific contributions
[edit]Wiedermann worked in the field of inflammation, investigating neuropeptides as mediators of inflammation[6][7] and the relationship between inflammation and coagulation in various diseases in the field of intensive care medicine.[8][9] His additional research focused on the safety and efficacy of fluid therapy in intensive care for circulatory instability[10][11] and scientific misconduct regarding colloidal infusion solutions.[12][13] His current research focuses on health services research.
Wiedermann was co-editor of the ''Pharmainformation'' from 1994 to 2017 and was a member of the editorial board of the ''Wiener klinische Wochenschrift'' from 2011 to 2017. He has published over 400 scientific papers.
