Composition
[edit]The Guardian's Jude Rogers noted that "Hung Up" mashes up the disco sounds of the late 1970s with the "phenomenon of the early 2000s".[1] It is a disco-pop song with influences of nu-disco and synth-pop.[2][3][4] According to the sheet music published by Musicnotes.com, it is set in common time, and has a moderate dance-beat tempo of 120 beats per minute.[5] Composed in the key of F major, Madonna's vocal range spans from the low note of G3 to the high note of B♭4.[5] It follows a chord progression of Dm–F–C–Dm in the verses, then switches to Dm–F–Am–Dm in the refrain, and to B♭–F–A–Dm for the bridge.[5] "Hung Up" features musical references to past Madonna songs such as "Holiday" (1983), "Like a Prayer" (1989), and "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" (1996). It also reefers Pink Floyd's 1973 song "Time", and bands such as Tom Tom Club and The S.O.S. Band.[6][7]
Author Stan Hawkins said that its main theme is temporality.[6] He described the lyrics as the autobiographical narrative of a woman who "once had nothing and started from scratch".[6] By her part, Ginia Bellafante held that the song talks about a woman "who migrates between boredom and agony as she waits for a man to call".[8] In contrast to "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)", which talks about yearning, the lyrics to "Hung Up" suggest unrequited love.[9] "Hung Up" begins with the ticking sound of a clock —taken from a remix of Gwen Stefani's 2004 single "What You Waiting For?", produced by Price— that symbolizes the loss of wasted time.[6][10][11] The "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" sample emerges in a "muffled" way behind the ticking clock, as Madonna sings the hook, Time goes by, so slowly.[6] As the hook becomes gains volume and strength, it's followed by a "glittery wall of sound, thumping beat, and rubbery bass".[7] Merged with the song's "chug-along" groove, the ABBA sample is intended to poke fun at the 1970s in a nostalgic fashion, and gives "Hung Up" "instant familarity".[6][12]
Madonna's sings with "pitched-upward" vocals "throwaway" lyrics such as Every little thing that you say or do/I’m hung up/I’m hung up on you, amid "head-bursting" bass and "clock-ticking ominousness".[11][13] She admits to being “hung up” to her errant lover, while at the same time complaining of being fed up with having to wait for him.[7] Her vocals, sounding the seventh chord of A major, reflect a "sense of instability" and are looped to the point where she sound's like she's out of breath.[6][14] One of "Hung Up"'s verses is lifted directly from Madonna's 1989 duet with Prince, "Love Song", included on her fourth studio album Like a Prayer.[15] In the bridge, Madonna rhymes the word waiting with hesitating, one of her favorite lyrical tropes, according too NME's Nick Levine.[16]
Critical reception
[edit]"The queen of reinvention has achieved the seemingly impossible yet again. In the footsteps of her least successful album ever, 2003's preachy, melody- breaching American Life, Madonna returns with a song that will restore faith among her minions, fans of pop music and radio programmers. 'Hung Up' is pure distraction: frothy and nonsensical and joyous".
Upon release, "Hung Up" received critical acclaim. From Pitchfork, Stephen M. Deusner said it was an "impressive and enjoyable" single that could be considered Madonna's best since "Ray of Light" (1998) or "Like a Prayer".[17] The BBC's Alan Braidwood also compared "Hung Up" to "Ray of Light", and past Madonna songs like "Vogue" (1990) and "Deeper and Deeper" (1992), ultimately concluding it was "full-on dance, dark, disco, fun, big".[18] While Spin's Carolyn Ganz said it was a "killer" single, The Malta Independent deemed it a "brilliant dance track".[19][20] Peter Robinson from The Observer commented that "Hung Up" is Madonna's "most wonderfully commercial single since the mid Eighties".[21]
Writing for New York magazine, Ben Williams described the song as sounding both throbbing as well as wistful.[10] According to Camille Paglia, writing for Salon, "Hung Up" is one of two "truly strong songs" on the album, the other being "Jump".[22] For The Austin Chronicle's Margaret Moser, the song strobes and pulses along with album track "Forbidden Love".[23] Matt Cappiello from the Daily Nexus called it "amazing" and "mind-numbing", and elaborated that, "['Hung Up'] should be frozen in a capsule and sent out into space. Martians need to know the wonders of our civilization, as expressed in the delicate form of bubblegum pop".[24]
Praise was given to the ABBA sample. Deusner complimented how it was used in such a way that it resembles a "brilliant mash-up rather than a lazy sample".[17] Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad's, Mark Coppens observed Madonna did a "good job" at sampling ABBA, and that the sample "swings [the song] from beginning to the end".[25] Peter S. Scholtes, writing for City Pages, said the sample on "Hung Up" made it "a vast improvement" over "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)".[26] From The Guardian, Alexis Petridis singled out the "joyous" sample, and said that, "only with the addition of Liza Minnelli on backing vocals and lyrics about Larry Grayson's friend Everard" could have "Hung Up" been "more camp".[27]

[edit]On November 4, 2005, Madonna opened the MTV Europe Music Awards with a performance of "Hung Up". She emerged from a giant glitter ball wearing purple leather boots and matching leotard.[28] Three days later, she sang the song on German televison show Wetten, dass..?.[29] On November 15, Madonna offered a brief concert at London's Koko Club, and sang "Hung Up" as opener. A video screen at the back of the stage split open to reveal the singer in culottes, leather jacket and boots, with her hair done in a Farrah Fawcett-style.[30] Four Days later, a "show-stopping rendition" of "Hung Up" was done on the Children in Need 2005 telethon.[31] On December 12, Madonna sang the single on Japanese variety show SMAP×SMAP.[32] One week later, at a "secret" gig at Tokyo's Studio Coast nightclub, Madonna sang "Hung Up" dressed in a leotard and low-slung pants.[33] "Hung Up" was the opening performance of the 48th Annual Grammy Awards, on February 8, 2006. British virtual band Gorillaz appeared on a blue screen singing their song "Feel Good Inc." with rappers De La Soul, and an hologram of Madonna.[34] Then, the singer herself appeared onstage singing "Hung Up" surrounded by a troupe of "elastic dancers".[35] Billboard named it the ninth greatest Grammy performance.[36] "Hung Up" was also the opening number of Madonna's set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, on April 30.[37]
Madonna closed 2006's Confessions Tour with "Hung Up". She began the song, then disappeared backstage halfway through, leaving the band playing. The stage was bathed by disco lights, as dancers freeran down the catwalks, off the secondary B-stages, and into the audience.[38] Madonna emerged back on the main stage dressed in a purple leotard, cropped jacket, and tinted shades.[38] At one point, she crawled "suggestively" along the main catwalk.[39] Gold mylar balloons fell from the ceiling as she invited the crowd to sing-along with her.[40] Christopher John Treacy from the Boston Herald wrote that it was the concert's "vocally weakest number. But by that point, we’d have forgiven her for just about anything".[41] The song's performance from the August 15–16 London concerts was included on the singer's second live album, The Confessions Tour (2007).[42] "Hung Up" was also the closing number of Madonna's set at the London Live Earth concert, on July 7, 2007. Billboard's Mark Sutherland said the performance turned Wembley Stadium into the "world’s biggest disco".[43]
On April 30, 2008, to promote her eleventh studio album Hard Candy, Madonna offered a free concert at New York's Roseland Ballroom and sang a hard rock version of "Hung Up".[44] She began strumming the opening lick of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (1965) on guitar, and asked the crowd if they were there to see the band. When they responded negatively, she began singing "Hung Up", which dedicating it to all the people who had waited outside in the queue to watch the show.[45] A heavy metal, guitar-based rendition of "Hung Up" —that included a riff of Pantera's "A New Level" (1992)— was done on that year's Sticky & Sweet Tour.[46][47] Chess imagery played on the background screens as the singer exclaimed: "In exactly 29 moves the queen will topple the king!".[48] The number ended with Madonna eliciting feedback from her guitar by grinding it against a speaker with her bottom.[49] The Philadelphia Inquirer's Dan DeLuca opined that the song "benefitted" from the guitar-based reworking.[49] "Hung Up" was included on the Sticky & Sweet Tour live album release (2010), recorded during the four concerts in Buenos Aires.[50]
The performance of "Hung Up" on the MDNA Tour (2012) removed the ABBA sample and had Madonna "strung up and suspended upside down by guerrilla fighters".[51] There was also a slacklining routine.[52] Sal Cinquemani reacted negatively to the rendition, concluding that, "['Hung Up'] should never be performed in any way other than its original form".[53] The performances of the song at the November 19–20 shows in Miami were recorded and released in the MDNA World Tour live album (2013).[54] In April 2015, halfway through rapper Drake's set at the Coachella Festival, Madonna appeared onstage singing a medley of "Human Nature" (1995) and "Hung Up", wearing a t-shirt that read "BIG AS MADONNA".[55][56] She then went on to "aggressively" kiss the rapper, whose shocked reaction became viral on the internet.[56][57]
On June 24, 2021, the singer made a surprise appearance at a pride party at the Boom Boom Room of The Standard hotel in New York and performed the song dressed in a see-through mesh top, leather shorts, a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier corset, a blue wig, and long pink fingerless gloves.[58] The following year, Madonna performed at New York's Terminal 5 as part of the World of Women’s NFT NYC event.[59] She sang a mashup of "Hung Up" and "Linda" (2022), by Dominican rapper Tokischa and Spanish singer Rosalía.[60] Tokischa herself joined Madonna for the performance and at one point, pretended to perform oral sex on her, and shared a French kiss with her.[60] From Pride.com, Rachel Shatto compared the antic to Madonna's kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.[60]
The song's performance on the Celebration Tour (2023—2024) had Madonna donning a red-and-black negligee and black knee-high black boots.[61] She was surrounded by topless female dancers, one of whom she shared a kiss with.[61] Before singing the song, Madonna pretended to FaceTime Tokischa —who sang some of her lines of the "Hung Up on Tokischa" remix.[62] During the final New York City concert, on January 29, 2024, Tokischa joined the performance.[63] Reviewing one of the London concerts, Thomas H. Greeen for The Arts Desk noted that the performance had many people dancing, although "not as much" as other numbers.[64]
