I first became aware of this after spending twelve years living in Australia. There is a huge beach, outdoor and sporting culture in Australia, and due to the intensity of the sun a third of people there develop some kind of skin cancer. People are unaware that most sunglasses are not polarized, so do not protect the eyes from the harmful UV rays. People buy expensive sunglasses in the belief that their eyes will be protected, but this just isn't the case. People should check their brand of sunglasses to make sure they are polarized to offset UV. People should cover up as well to negate exposure to the sun's rays. This is even true on an overcast day.
