The Student Room Group (often referred to as TSR) is a UK-based privately held student community company. The company owns two student websites thestudentroom.co.uk and theuniguide.co.uk.
TheStudentRoom.co.uk
[edit]The Student Room (often abbreviated to TSR[1][2]), established in 1999, is a United Kingdom based community and social learning website for school and university students. It is generally known as the UK’s largest online student community.[3][4][5]
It connects students with other students so that they can make more informed education choices, get help with their studies and get support with student life.
Discussion on The Student Room covers study help, choosing a university, careers and broader student life conversations.[6] Many UK universities have official student representatives answering questions on TSR.[7][8][9]
The Student Room contains a student finance zone in partnership with the official student loan organisation, Student Finance England.[10] The Student Room's volunteer clearing & application advisors are trained by UCAS, the UK’s official undergraduate admission service).[11]
TheUniGuide.co.uk
[edit]The Uni Guide provides advice on the university application process, as well as guides to UK universities and courses. These guides include statistics from a variety of sources[12] including the Higher Education Statistics Agency, the National Student Survey and Longitudinal Education Outcomes. The Uni Guide was formerly Which? University and was acquired by The Student Room Group, from the UK consumer advocacy group Which?, in February 2020.[13][14]
History
[edit]The Student Room forum was created in around 2001 under its original name UK Learning.[15] . Launched by Charles Delingpole[16] as a site where students at university could talk to each other, the forum has since developed into a site for all young people. The UK Learning name was changed to The Student Room in late 2004.[17]
In 2014, The Student Room hosted a forum on apprenticeships and traineeships on behalf of the UK Parliament’s House of Commons Education Select Committee.[18] In 2016 Education Secretary Justine Greening answered students’ questions on The Student Room.[19] Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Caroline Lucas answered questions from students on The Student Room in the 2010 UK General Election campaign.[20] Lord Browne took part in a live Q&A on The Student Room as part of The Browne Review on UK student finance.[21]
In 2016, Mary Curnock Cook OBE, the former Chief Executive of UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service), joined The Student Room Group Board as a Non-Executive Director.[22] At that time, Mary Curnock Cook was also on the Board of the Open University and the Student Loans Company.[23]
