Vinton Dome
[edit]The Vinton Dome is a gas and oil producing salt dome located about twelve kilometers southwest of Vinton, Louisiana in Calcasieu Parish. It has been in production since 1910 and is cited as the first salt dome where gas was produced.

Harry Eugene Wheeler (1907 – 26 January 1987) was an American geologist and stratigrapher. Eric Cheney called him "the chief theoretical architect of sequence stratigraphy"[1]
Wheeler was a professor of geology at the University of Washington from 1948 until 1976.[2]
Work on stratigraphy
[edit]Wheeler's work in the 1950 and 1960s was pivotal in the later development of sequence stratigraphy, which is still used today, for example by petroleum industry geologists.[3] His 1964 paper, Baselevel, Lithosphere Surface, and Time-Stratigraphy[4] evolved the concept of base level to emphasize the continuous spatial and temporal nature of stratigraphy, eventually giving rise to Wheeler diagrams:
But what of stratigraphic discontinuities as manifestations of nondeposition and accompanying erosion? Here we pass into the realm of no less important but completely abstract, area-time framework, in which a discontinuity takes on ‘area-time’ configuration in the form of the lacuna, which in turn, consists of hiatus and degradation vacuity.
Wheeler diagrams
[edit]The Wheeler diagram is a spatio-temporal plot, showing the (usually one dimensional) spatial distribution of sedimentary facies through time in a two-dimensional chart. Three-dimensional seismic data allows the construction of three-dimensional Wheeler 'diagrams', but these are rare because of the difficulty of producing them.

Dr. Oz Yilmaz received his Ph.D. in Geophysics from Stanford University. He previously worked for Schlumberger, Western Geophysical, and Paradigm. Dr. Yilmaz received the Virgil Kauffman Gold Medal Award from SEG in 1991 and the Conrad Schlumberger Award from EAEG in 1992. He served SEG as Vice-President from 1993-1994, and as the 1996 Spring Distinguished Lecturer. He also served EAEG in 1992 as Associate Editor of Geophysical Prospecting. He is the author of "Seismic Data Analysis" published by SEG.
Oz Yilmaz on SEG website Oz Yilmaz is the founder and director of Anatolian Geophysical, Istanbul, and Chief Technology Officer of GeoTomo LLC, Houston. He received his bachelor's degee in geology with geophysics option from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1970, his master's in geophysics with research in rock physics and earthquake seismology from Stanford University in 1972, and after five years in the industry, a PhD in geophysics with research in exploration seismology from Stanford University in 1979. Oz was SEG Vice President in 1993-94 term, and was the 1996 Spring Distinguished Lecturer. He served as associate editor of the EAGE journal Geophysical Prospecting in 1995-96 and on Honors and Awards Committee of the EAGE in 2004-05. Oz was honored by the SEG in 1991 with the Virgil Kauffman Gold Medal and by EAGE in 1992 with the Conrad Schlumberger Award. His biography was included in Who's Who in the World, 1998 edition. He was elected a member to the European Academy of Sciences in 2002. He was honored by his alma mater, the University of Missouri-Rolla, with an Honorary Professional Degree in geology and geophysics in 2003, by the Geophysical Society of Houston in 2009 with Honorary Membership, and by SEG Honorary Membership in 2011.
