Charles M L Smith

Charles Monckton Lockhart Smith (born 16th April 1965) is a British businessman. He founded At Your Service Event Staffing Ltd, a staffing company based in the UK that supports highend events. Smith is a champion of fair pay and working conditions in the hospitality industry.

He is also a founding Director of the drinks business Twenty First Amendment Ltd (trading as Pontoon Cocktails).

He is a member of the Livery of The Worshipful Company of Drapers.

He is a Member of The London Rowing Club.

Early Life

Born into a military family, Smith was brought up in Malta, Cyprus, Germany and at his family home Ellingham Hall, Norfolk.

On Sunday 2nd January 1972 Smith, was evacuated from Malta with his mother and brother as part of Operation Exit and British withdrawal from the island.

Smith was living in Cyprus during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on 20th July 1974 and subsequent partition of the island.

He was educated at Scaitcliffe School, Harrow School and Seale Hayne Agricultural College.

Family

Smith was born in an army quarter during a Boxing Day lunch party to Lt Colonel Henry Martin Lockhart Smith (Grenadier Guards) and Margaret Louise Smith (Nee Eaton). His mother Margaret, one of 5 siblings, was brought up at Luddesdown Court which was once owned by William the Conqueror’s brother Bishop Odo of Bayeux and documented in the Doomsday Book . It is reputed to be the oldest permanently inhabited house in England.

Smith's Great Great Great Great Grandfather, John Smith was Clerk to Worshipful Company of Drapers.

Smith's Great Great Great Grandfather, Henry Smith, was embroiled in the 1887 Hughes-Hallett Scandal at Ellingham Hall between Francis Hughes-Hallett and Lady Beatrice Selwyn (Hughes-Hallett's step-daughter and Henry Smith's niece).. Henry Smith was also Clerk to Worshipful Company of Drapers.

Smith's Great Great Grandfather, Colonel John 'Tiger' Smith (2nd Madras Light Cavalry), reputedly shot 99 'maneater' tigers whilst serving in India in the early 18th century. On 28 April 1819 he re-discovered the Ajanta Caves which are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Smith is the youngest of two siblings. His brother Vaughan Smith is an ex Grenadier Guards Captain, founder of The Frontline Club a highly regarded war journalist and champion for the freedom of press.

He is married to Lucinda Kate Smith (nee Turner) whose grandfather Sir Michael Turner was Chairman of HSBC. Her Great Grandfather, Sir Skinner Turner, was Chief Judge of the British Supreme Court for China from 1921 to 1927.

Smith has three children, Archie William Lockhart Smith, Theodore Henry Lockhart Smith and Florence Alice Lockhart Smith.
