There are two different types of links on MediaWiki-like software, such as Wikipedia.

Internal Links

This section teachs how to make an internal link.

 [[WP:Sandbox]]

Without a secondary name, this will just output a link to the page along with the name. Output is WP:Sandbox

 [[WP:Sandbox|Sandbox]]

With a secondary name, this will use the secondary name as the label. Output is Sandbox.

Categorizing

To categorize an article, input

 [[Category:Stubs]]

Output is disabled in this example.

To link to the category without putting it in a category, insert a : before the rest of the content, like this

 [[:Category:Stubs|Stubs]]

which will output Stubs.

External Links

This section teachs how to make an external link. Without a name (a number will be installed for you)

 [http://wiki.riteme.site]

outputs [1]

With a name

 [http://wiki.riteme.site English Wikipedia]

outputs English Wikipedia

Note that the symbol you saw indicates that the link is indeed external. In this example, it just returns you to the home page of Wikipedia, that's all.
