Chainz an American experimental, rock, electroacoustic, and electronic music/production group. Chainz was formed in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2009 by Colton Jacobs (music), William MacLachlan(managing) and Sib Bythewood(technical director/artwork). Jacobs has written and recorded most of the music, originally with your typical rock line up of guitars, bass, and drums. Since then Jacobs, along with Bythewood, has shifted to a more electronic sound, while still venturing back to their roots of guitars.[1]

Since Chainz Formation in 2009, they have self recorded, and produced two albums: Soul(2010), and Halftone(2010). A third album, Axiom Shift, was announced and is slated to be available for purchase around summer of 2011.

Chainz is a completely online based group. All songs are available for download only, as an attempt to promote green production.

Albums

  • Soul (2010)
Soul was a continuous song album, with each song linked to one another. Upon release of Soul, the group posted "There's not much to say about Soul, aside from it's creation instilled the most work any of us have ever chosen to do willingly. For our musician, pouring himself into the music and matching the performance of bands of five or more members on his own. For our producer, I'm not quite sure as producing has fallen slightly behind in these primary stages. For our computer feller; electronic advice, website creation and occasional management. Soul is our star child, the reason behind all the beginning work." Soul's official release date was February 1, 2010. In a post on the Chainz blog, Jacobs said about Soul, "I have given more of my own heart and soul into this project than anything I've ever done. This whole project and everyone involved means so much to me. I just want people to enjoy some raw tunes from a local musician, who can understand what people go through." Soul was a spur of the moment creation that formed from a late night, caused by ongoing depression, stated Jacobs. Jacobs brought on Bythewood for graphics purposes, and album art. MacLachlan continued to help with production and management. Also, Corey Carroll would consult with Jacobs on quality on the music.
  • Axiom Shift (2011)
Axiom Shift was the second project taken on by Chainz. It was a follow up of Soul. It a blog post Bythewood stated, "Axiom Shift is our next step following Soul, and hopefully a step on the right path. We're looking for a good mixture of tastes so that anyone who gets their hands on one of our albums will at least be able to find one song they'll want to listen to time and time again. Truly, even with the current releases, each and every one of us have picked a different favorite. I beseech you to find your own, it's worth it, and Axiom Shift has a lot to offer." Axiom Shift was slated for release in late 2010, but because of some late additions and contributions musically by people such as Bythewood, and Jacobs' good friend Andrew Patton, release has been delayed until the summer of 2011. Axiom Shift has a mix of acoustic sets, as well as some new electronic stuff composed by Jacobs and Bythewood.
  • Halftone (2010)
Halftone is a two disc, 20 song set, of all electronic music, as well as remixes of previous Chainz songs. Disc one contains completely new stuff composed by Jacobs using Acoustica Mixcraft. Disc two contains 10 songs as well, but these are remixes and revamps. Bythewood stated in a blog upon Halftone releaase, "Colton pours his soul into the music, and I'd put good money on the fact it's one of the first things he thinks about when he's got some spare time on his hands if not the very thing that keeps him rolling. Whether you like the music or not, keep in mind this is one man. True, I myself have had a hand in a song here or there, but no more so than any other close friend of his. This is one brilliant mind for music and one surging soul for a nation's heart. So give the songs an ear, and if you like what you hear, maybe give 'em two if you can spare the time. It's worth it." Halftone was officialy release to the internet on November 9, 2010.[2]

Two other albums are in the works as of January 15, 2011:

  • Project Omaha
Jacobs and Patton will be collaborating to produce a completely rock based album.
  • The Inferno
Another electronic album in the makings.
