Operation Rogoj ‘94

Operation "Rogoj '94" Language Follow Edit The Kladan offensive in 1994 is an operation of the RBiH Army carried out on the Kladan battlefield from mid-May to early June 1994. The units of the RBiH Army managed to break through the defense lines of the Republika Srpska Army and advance about 15 km to the east, approaching Vlasenica about 10 km. Although the objectives of the offensive were not fully fulfilled, it represented a tactical and propaganda victory for the RBiH Army.[1] Kladanj offensive 1994 War in Bosnia and Herzegovina Situation on the Kladanj battlefield after the end of the offensive Date mid-May-early June 1994 Location Kladanj battlefield Outcome Tactical and propaganda victory of the RBiH Army[1] Conflicting parties Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina Army of the RBiH Republika Srpska VRS Military units Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina 2nd Corps Operative Group 6 – East 121st Mountain Brigade 1st Muslim-Podrinje Mountain Brigade 119th Muslim Mountain Brigade (partially) Operative Group 5 IDČ "Panthers" IDČ "Lions" Anti-Terrorism Unit "Balta" " Živinica ose" Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina 3rd Corps 7th Muslim Brigade (partially) Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina Units of the General Staff "Black Swans" (partially) Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina Units of the MUP Special Purpose Police Detachment "Bosnia" Republika Srpska Drina Corps 1st Vlasene Light Infantry Brigade 1st Militia Light Infantry Brigade 2nd Romanian Motorized Brigade (two battalions) 1st Bratunac Light Infantry Brigade (one battalion) "Wolves from Drina" Total: about 2,500–3,000 fighters[2] Contents Introduction edit Kladanj was located at a distance of only 7 km from the VRS position, but it was protected by a series of high hills that extend east of the city. Although the town was within range of Serbian artillery, it could not target it accurately. During 1993 and early 1994, Kladanj was often under shelling, but it was nowhere near destroyed like nearby Olov. The strategic importance of Kladnje was reflected in the fact that the city is located on the main road between Sarajevo and Tuzla. Particularly significant was the route of the road to Olovo, which the VRS crossed a few kilometers northeast of that city.[2] Distribution of forces The offices of the Free Territory of Kladnje were defended by the 121st Mountain Brigade and the 1st Muslim-Podrinje Mountain Brigade, which were part of Operative Group 6 – East of the 2nd Corps.[2] Other units, mainly maneuver units, participated in the offensive: "Ziviničko ose", IDČ "Panteri", IDČ "Lavi", Military Police unit "Balta", parts of the 7th Muslim Brigade and "Black Swans", and a special unit of the MUP- and "Bosnia". By May 23, part of the units of the 121st Mountain Brigade were replaced on the battlefield by the newly arrived units of the 119th Muslim Mountain Brigade.[3] The zones of responsibility of three brigades of the Drina Corps of the VRS extended opposite Kladnje. The 1st Militia Light Infantry Brigade was deployed to the northeast of the city, directly to the east the 1st Vlaseni Light Infantry Brigade, and to the southeast two battalions from the 2nd Romanian Motorized Brigade. One battalion from the 1st Bratunac Light Infantry Brigade was also attached to the 2nd Romanian Brigade. Overall, the VRS forces on the Kladno battlefield numbered around 2,500–3,000 fighters.[2] During the offensive, the special unit "Wolves from the Drina" arrived as reinforcement.[4] Combat actions edit Preparations for the offensive edit The RBiH Army was not satisfied with guarding its defense lines on the Kladno battlefield. Between January 12 and 17, 1994, units of the 121st Mountain Brigade liberated the settlements of Jelačiće and Majdan, located about 10 km northeast of Kladnje, on the border of the zones of responsibility of the 1st Militia and 1st Birčan Infantry Brigades of the VRS. Exchanges of artillery and mortar fire, sometimes accompanied by minor infantry skirmishes, continued throughout February and March. The intensity of the fighting increased around April 14, when the RBiH Army increased its infantry activities along the demarcation lines.
