[edit]James W. Mitchell was born to parents of factory workers on November 16, 1943, in Durham, North Carolina. He graduated from North Carolina A&T State University in 1965, where he was honored his B.S. degree in Chemistry. He further pursued his studies in Chemistry, receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1970, from Iowa State University. His first job after receiving his Ph.D. was with AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, where he was the Chair of the Lab's Affirmative Action Committee. During his time there, he also became one of the founders for the Association of Black Laboratory Employees. He worked his way up this company, as in 1982, he was promoted to supervisor, and in 1975, he was promoted as head of the research department. More specifically, he supervised the Inorganic Analytical Chemistry Research Group, and was head of the Analytical Chemistry Research Department. His leading made the Department a renowned Laboratory Research organization worldwide. As a chemist, he wrote approximately 100 publishings. In 1999, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement in Industry Award from the National Society of Black Engineers. Eventually, in 2002 he began working at Howard University, but had many versatile positions there. He was the Professor of Materials Science and the Professor of Chemical Engineering, all while he was co-writing a book, "Contamination Control in Trace Analysis," as well as writing more scientific publishings. He was Director of the CREST Nanoscale Analytical Sciences Research and Education Center.
