What makes a good question?

[edit]

A good question is a question asked by someone that does the following:

  • Provokes thought by reference desk answer contributors
  • Asks for an answer that is intriguing to at least one reference desk answer contributor
  • Makes the reference desk answer contributors go, "Ooooh, that's really interesting"
    • ...or, "Wow, I had no idea!"
      • ...or even, "Hmm, that's really different, lemme see what I can help out with here..."

We don't get questions like this often here, so if you're reading this message and received the following message at your question:

This has been identified as a good question by the Association of Reference Desk Employees. Congratulations on asking something thought-provoking and interesting, and we look forward to more questions like these in the future, either from you or someone else.

then you should be really proud of yourself.
