SAWA Global is a registered Canadian non profit organization based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and founded by social entrepreneur and humanitarian Daphne Nederhorst. The name SAWA (saw’wah) means equal in Swahili.
SAWA Global is an online web portal which allows local leaders of grassroots organizations in the 50 poorest countries to showcase their extraordinary initiatives to solve the main challenges of the 21st century. Through short video clips posted on the SAWA portal, these organizations can share their successes and projects instantly with a global audience.
The videos or presented solutions are classified in 5 themes and aligned with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The SAWA Themes are:
(1) Water Food and Shelter
(2) Happy Children
(3) Health for All
(4) Green Planet
(5) Women = Men
Today Sawa Global is represented by 200 video journalists in 60 countries.
