DESH KHOJDAI JANDA (In search of nation)
Heading text
[edit]The Movie "DESH KHOJDAI JANDA" is a Nepali feature film about the Nepali speaking Bhutanese people from Bhutan, living in Eastern part of Nepal as a refugee.
A film based on the predicament of Bhutanese refugees struggling to go back to their homeland has recently been wrapped up in Kakarvitta after a full month of filming. Under the working title of Desh Khojdai Janda(In search of Nation), the film is directed by Prakash Angdembe, a popular theatre activist in Jhapa Nepal.
The history of Bhutanese refugees can be traced back to the early 1990s which was marked by ethnic conflict between people of Bhutanese origin and the Lhotshampas who are of Nepali origin, including the Kirat, Tamang and Gurung people. Many, in the thousands, were resettled in camps in eastern Nepal by the UNHCR. Since 2008, resettlement programmes have also been sending refugees to other parts of the world, namely the US, Australia and Canada. The film charts the life of a certain Karbari Kaka, a Bhutanese refugee known for his pleasant demeanour and obliging nature. He has immense love for his native country and even dons a daily ‘tika’ made the soil from his motherland. Karbari Kaka urges other refugees at his camp to become more patriotic and eventually agrees to take them back to Bhutan. As befits a good narrative—one unfortunately based on real life situations—the group suffers a lot, many are injured, and eventually all are forced to return to refugee camps. Eventually, even Karbari Kaka, his strong will and patriotism bludgeoned by harsh realities, decides to opt for third country settlement. The film stars Hemanta Budathoki, Babu Bogati, Aruna Karki, Sarita Oli, Mina Koirala and Tibet Rai along with old and new theatre actors from Jhapa essaying important roles.
