Background

[edit]

In the aftermath of its Polish campaign, Sweden had managed to knock out Denmark–Norway and the Electorate of Saxony out of the Great Northern War. Charles XII' lead was further augmented by the defection of the Cossack Hetmanate to the Swedish side, while negotiations with the Ottoman Empire were already on their way. The Ottomans were eager to reclaim Azov from the Russians, their allies the Crimean Khanate was also preparing a large scale raid into Russia. After reorganizing his army in Saxony during 1707, Charles invaded Russia. Peter the Great's offer to concede Ingria was rebuffed as Charles was certain that he would completely conquer his adversary's realm.
