Ali Malkawi is the Founder and Director of the T.C. Chan Center for Building Simulation and Energy Studies and a Professor of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design in Philadelphia, where he has taught since 2001. [1] He received his B.S. in Architectural Engineering and Environmental Design from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 1989, his Masters of Architecture from University of Colorado at Denver in 1990 and his Ph.D. in Architecture Technology/Artificial Intelligence from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1994. [2] Ali Malkawi has also taught at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor from 1994 to 2001 as an Assistant Professor of Architecture. From 2000 to 2001 he worked at Harvard University as a Visiting Professor. [3]
Malkawi is primarily known for his involvement with the emergence of a new kind of architecture, in which building performance is a guiding design principle, adopting new performance-based priorities for the design of cities, buildings, landscape and infrastructures. The emphasis on building performance is now redefining expectations of the building design, its process and practice. Malkawi’s research focuses on computational simulation, building performance evaluation and advanced visualization. [4] Ali is an expert in using building simulation, engineering, computation, artificial intelligence and virtual reality as a tool for sustainable design. [5]
