Hello, welcome to your New Page Patrol School page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your NPP School page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working).
Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Notability as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.
- How to use this page
This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.
If both the instructor and student make completing the course curriculum a top priority, it will generally take around a month to go through the entirety of the curriculum. This pace is not required or necessarily expected, but rather is provided in order to give participants an idea of what to expect.
Notability
[edit]PART 1
When patrolling or reviewing an article, you may often come across articles do not meet the WP:N guidelines, but the editors make the edits in good faith. Please read WP:AGF and do not WP:BITE the new editors.
- A. Notability is a test guidelines to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article in Wikipedia mainspace. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, General Notability Guidelines, Specific Notability Guidelines, Stand-alone list before completing the following tasks.
General notability guidelines
[edit]1. In your own words, why it is important to WP:AGF and not WP:BITE new editors.
Answer: It is essential to WP:AGF because it promotes a respectful and a welcoming atmosphere on Wikipedia. By assuming that other editors are acting with positive intentions, we build trust and encourage collaboration, which are critical to a project based on collective effort.
WP:BITE reinforces this by reminding experienced editors to be patient and supportive towards new users, who may still be learning Wikipedia’s policies and best practices. Harsh criticism or dismissive comments can discourage newcomers, potentially pushing them away from the platform altogether.
- . New editors make mistakes as they do not know the Wikipedia guidelines. Therefore it's important to avoid attacks on new editors which may result in unpleasant situations such as fights or their leave and subsequent loss to the community. Cassiopeia talk 07:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
2. In your own words, how does notability is defined in Wikipedia?
Answer: In Wikipedia, notability is a guideline used to determine whether a topic warrants its own article. A topic should have significant coverage from reliable, independent sources. This ensures that articles are about topics widely documented and recognised outside trivial or self-published mentions. It also should not fall into the parameters of WP:NOT policy.
- Good. Wikipedia, notability means "worthy to be noted" - it is defined as a topic is "presumably" notable for stand-alone article or list if (1) it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject whee by the sources talk "directly" about the subject in depth and in length and not only passing mentioned and (2) it is not excluded under the What WP:Wikipedia is not policy. Cassiopeia talk 07:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
3. Does a step by step instructions on how to "Change a car tire" considered a notable topic in Wikipedia?
Answer: A step-by-step guide on "How to Change a Car Tyre" would not meet Wikipedia's notability criteria, as Wikipedia is not a how-to manual. However, a broader article on car maintenance or tyre-changing, with significant coverage from reliable sources, may be considered notable, i.e., WP:NOTHOW.
- Cassiopeia talk 07:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
4. What are the differences between A WP:GNG and a specific notability guidelines? how do we determine which one to use when patrolling an article?
Answer: WP:GNG establishes that a topic is presumed notable if it has significant coverage in reliable, independent sources. This guideline applies to most topics and serves as the default standard on Wikipedia. WP:SNG apply to particular subject areas, such as biographies, films, books, or academic journals.
When patrolling an article, first check if the topic falls under a specific notability guideline. GNG is the primary standard on Wikipedia. However, if the article does not meet the above criteria, you should refer to the relevant SNG guidelines for suitability.
- . Good. Both can be used when patrolling but those subject falls under SNG/SSG (sport specific guidelines) but fails to meet the WP:GNG guidelines would sometimes nominated for deletion WP:AfD for discussion to determine the status of the article. (We will cover AfD in later assignment). Cassiopeia talk 07:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
Specific notability guidelines
[edit]5. If an editor creates an article about "2024 Summer Olympics" in 2019 without providing any sources, is the subject considered not notable and why?
Answer: The topic of the "2024 Summer Olympics" would not be considered automatically non-notable simply because the article was created in 2019 without sources. Olympic games, both summer and winter, are planned years in advance and typically have substantial source material available to support the article. An article in such a state could be tagged for improvement.
- . Cassiopeia talk 07:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- B. Without considered of sources/content policies and review just based on "subject specific notability" (SSN) "alone" for sake of the exercises below, please answer if the subject meets the SSN guidelines, based on the given content below, and specify under (1) which notability criteria they meet or fail (example - MUSICBI#1 if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations.
6. A New York city based 2019 start up software company , specializing in data mining, has just received a USD 200K investor fund.
Answer: The criteria would be WP:ORG – Fail. The company does not meet the notability criteria, as an investment alone does not demonstrate significant, independent media coverage or recognition. Additionally, there is no evidence of notable success or widespread recognition within its industry.
- . Cassiopeia talk 07:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
7. Nascimento Ferreira who is a Ultimate Fighting Championships fighters with the undefeated mixed martial arts record of 8-0.
Answer: The criteria would be WP:MMANOT and WP:MMABIO – Fail. A fighter, as per above guidelines, could be considered notable if they have achieved significant recognition or being ranked. An undefeated record of 8–0 (as per the question) is noteworthy but does not guarantee notability. This fighter require more significant coverage and accomplishments to be considered.
- As per NMMA - subject needs to be ranked world top 10 or fought in a championship in tier one MMA promotion. Cassiopeia talk 07:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
8. A upcoming action drama title "Suleiman the Great" based on the the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, was reported will be in production in December 2025 and to be released on August 2026 in the cinemas.

Production has not commenced and possibly no wide media coverage either.
- . Cassiopeia talk 07:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
9. A political candidates, without any previous or current political position, who is running for November 2025 election for a Senator position in United States with multiple local newspapers coverage of his candidacy.
Answer: The criteria would be WP:BIO and WP:POLITICIAN – Fail. A candidate for the US Senate is expected to receive significant national coverage. The availability and inclusion of such material are required for consideration of an article. Coverage from local newspapers alone does not meet the criteria outlined above. An exception could be made if there is significant past coverage or notable accomplishments.
- . Cassiopeia talk 07:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
10. A singer who self produced his first album in May 2019 and his songs are listed in Spotify.

Sources and content policy
[edit]- A. Sources
- Wikipedia is an encyclopedia for such content claimed should be supported by independent (secondary), reliable sources for verification. Please read WP:RS, WP:IS, WP:RSP, WP:V, WP:PROVEIT, WP:Primary, WP:Secondary, and WP:Tertiary and answered the the below questions in your own words.
- You could contact WP:RX if you could not find the sources yourself either on web due to Paywall content or printed books.
- 1.
Topic | Explanation | 5 Examples | Comment by Cass |
---|---|---|---|
Reliable source | A reliable source on Wikipedia is one that is published by a reputable entity, written by authors with expertise in the subject, and has a fact-checked, editorial process. Scholarly articles, reputable news outlets, books by academic publishers, and official reports are typically considered reliable. Self-published sources, opinion pieces, and user-generated content are usually not reliable unless the author is an established expert in the field. |
|
. Cassiopeia talk 06:45, 18 December 2024 (UTC) |
User generated sources | User-generated sources are materials created by individuals without editorial oversight, such as blogs, wikis, social media posts, and forums. They are generally not considered reliable on Wikipedia because they lack professional fact-checking and can be biased or inaccurate. Exceptions may apply if the author is a recognised expert, and the content is published on a credible platform. | . Cassiopeia talk 06:45, 18 December 2024 (UTC) | |
Non Independent source | Non-independent sources are materials closely associated with the subject they cover. While they may provide accurate information, they can lack neutrality due to potential bias or promotional intent. They are generally acceptable for straightforward factual details but not for contentious claims or analysis. |
|
. Cassiopeia talk 06:45, 18 December 2024 (UTC) |
- 2.
Type | Explanation | Sources (15 Primary ; 5 Secondary ; 5 Tertiary) | Comment by Cass |
---|---|---|---|
Primary | A primary source is an original document or direct evidence related to the subject. These provide raw data. |
|
. Published books - not primary if the books are an analysis or interpretation of other published books/articles. Cassiopeia talk 07:14, 18 December 2024 (UTC) |
Secondary | A secondary source is an analysis, interpretation, or evaluation of primary sources. These are considered more reliable for verifying facts and presenting balanced viewpoints. |
|
. Cassiopeia talk 07:14, 18 December 2024 (UTC) |
Tertiary | A tertiary source is a compilation or summary of information from primary and secondary sources. These provide general overviews or quick references but are not suitable for detailed analysis or verification of specific claims. |
|
. Cassiopeia talk 07:14, 18 December 2024 (UTC) |
- 3.
Subject | Primary | Secondary | Tertiary | Comment by Cass |
---|---|---|---|---|
Example: Art | Example:Sculpture | Example:Article critiquing the sculpture | Example:Encyclopedic article on the sculptor | |
History | Personal Memoirs by Ulysses S. Grant. | A modern biography on Grant. | Wikipedia article on Grant. | . Cassiopeia talk |
Science | A research paper published in Lancet or New England Journal of Medicine. | A review article analysing and summarising the published research studies. | An encyclopaedia entry or a textbook that compiles general scientific knowledge. | . Cassiopeia talk |
Athletes | Official competition results from a major sporting event. | A biography or documentary about an athlete involved in the said competition. | An athletic reference book or sports encyclopaedia that compiles general information. | . Cassiopeia talk |
- 4. Please explain in your own words why the content claimed needs to be verified?
Answer: Content on Wikipedia needs to be verified to ensure accuracy, reliability, and neutrality. Since anyone can edit Wikipedia, verifying claims through reliable sources helps prevent misinformation, bias, or unverifiable statements, ensuring that articles provide factual and balanced information. This process maintains the quality and trustworthiness of the platform.
- . Content needs to verifiable so we may know where the info/source from for we could know if the source is independent and/or reliable, and not because it is the facts or true - see WP:But it's true!. If source indicated XXX is from Jamaica but the fact XXX is from Cuba, we put XXX is from Jamaica in article as per source. We will correct the info when the sources (not need to be the same source) correct itself. For example Alexander the Great - How he die is based on which sources you read, from poising, to malaria and typhoid fever to infectious (meningitis) to acute pancreatitis and etc. Cassiopeia talk 07:30, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- 5.Could we used Wikipedia as the source? and why?
Answer: :No. Wikipedia itself should not typically be used as a primary source. While it can be a useful starting point for general information, it is a tertiary source, meaning it compiles content from other sources. Since Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, its content may not always be reliable or up-to-date. Instead, it is better to cite the original, reliable sources referenced in Wikipedia articles.
- . Wikipedia can not be the sources as the content of Wikipedia is supported by "other sources" - See WP:CIRCULAR. Wikipedia is a online knowledge sharing platform. Readers should check the sources in the article and verify/read the info themselves. Cassiopeia talk 07:30, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- 6.Give an example and explain why a source is reliable but not independent of a subject?
Answer: An example of a reliable but not independent source would be a company's annual report. An annual financial report is a reliable source of information because it is produced by a reputed organization, contains audited financial data, and is subject to legal and regulatory oversight. However, it is not independent because it is produced by the company itself and may present the information in a way that is favourable to its interests, potentially omitting or downplaying negative aspects.
- . All private companies, education, governments, social media sites and organizations are NOT reliable as there are not fact checking in place (they can say/write/public whatever they want). Books from well reputable publication house, reliable magazines, major newspapers from and etc are considered reliable.
- Answer again - give another example:
- Answer: Al Jazeera (WP:ALJAZEERA) is regarded as a reputable and independent media organisation (WP:RSP). However, as it is partially funded by the government of Qatar, there may be a potential conflict of interest on topics related to the Qatari government. QEnigma talk 08:36, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- . Cassiopeia talk 08:50, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

- Answer again - give another example:
- 7.Give an example and explain why a source is independent source but not reliable?
Answer: An example of an independent but not reliable source would be a personal blog written by an individual without expertise in a particular field. For instance, a blog post about the health benefits of a new diet, written by a non-expert.
While the source is independent because it is not affiliated with any company or organisation and expresses the individual's personal views, it is not reliable because it lacks verification, peer review, or professional oversight. The information may be biased, inaccurate, or based on personal opinion rather than evidence-based research.

Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. His creative period spanned more than 70 years. He works includes The Guggenheim, swirling, snail-shaped museum in the middle of Manhattan.[1][2] Fallingwater, which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture."[3] This is one of Wright's most famous private residences (completed 1937), was built for Mr. and Mrs. Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr., at Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Constructed over a 30-foot waterfall, it was designed according to Wright's desire to place the occupants close to the natural surroundings. The house was intended to be more of a family getaway, rather than a live-in home.[4]

No original research
[edit]- 12. In your own words, why Wikipedia is not a platform to publish original research?
Answer: Wikipedia is not a platform for original research because its purpose is to summarise existing knowledge from reliable, verifiable sources, rather than presenting new ideas or findings. This ensures content is accurate, well-supported, and accessible to a broad audience.
- . Not only need to cited by reliable sources but it also need to be independent from the subject. Cassiopeia talk 09:22, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
- 13. In your own words, please provide one example with explanation when it is appropriate to insert an original research or an opinion in an article.
Answer: It is appropriate to include original research or opinion in an article when it is clearly attributed to a reliable source or expert, and the research or opinion adds significant value to the topic. For example, if a scholar publishes a new theory in a peer-reviewed journal, it can be included in the article as long as it is properly referenced. However, personal interpretations or unverified research should not be included.

Verifiability
[edit]- Please read WP:V and answer the questions below
- 15. If the subject has two sons and it is supported by three independent, reliable sources but in reality he has 3 sons. Could we change the content from "2" sons to "3 sons"? and why?
Answer: No, the content cannot be changed from "2 sons" to "3 sons" unless a WP:RS explicitly states that the subject has three sons. Wikipedia relies on verifiability, not WP:TRUE, meaning all content must be based on information published in reliable sources, even if it does not align with reality. Including the claim of three sons without a supporting source would violate WP:BLPRS guidelines.
