The VR Class Sm8 is a long-distance, bi-mode version of the VR Class Sm7, intended for use across Finland on VR's regional rail network The units are either 2 or 4 cars long, compared to the Sm7's 3 cars, however they have less traction power and a reduced traction package in addition to their diesel engine(s), giving them a lower acceleration rate and lower top speed of 160 km/h (99 mph). They have 2+2 seating, larger, comfier seats, and significantly reduced standing capacity. Sm8 units also run certain short InterCity services, such as Pieksamäki-Tampere, Tampere-Pori and Oulu-Rovaniemi.

Info

[edit]

The VR Class Sm8 comes in three variants:

  • 2-car, bi-mode
  • 4-car, bi-mode
  • 4-car, electric only, includes Exstra class.

The 2-car units are intended for use on low-traffic lines, such as Joensuu-Nurmes, Rovaniemi-Kemijärvi and Karjaa-Hanko. 4-car bi-modes are used on more frequented lines, such as those radiating from Haapamäki. The 4-car electric consists are used mainly on the Tampere-Pori route, but also on peak time Y services from Helsinki to Tammisaari.
