Score for a Cause

Score for a Cause is a nonprofit that collects and donates sports equipment to those in need. Started back in 2013, its main goal was to collect sports equipment through drives at local schools, organizations, etc. From its immediate success, Score for a Cause created a website, Facebook page, Twitter account and Instagram.

History

In 2012, the founders (X and Y) visited Punta Cana, Dominican Republic on a family vacation. Here is where they met a little, local boy on the beach who spoke very little English. He appeared to love sports, such as beach soccer and volleyball. With the minimum communication available, X and Y understood that he didn't have any proper footwear, equipment or the resources to play any organized sports. Throughout the week on the beach, they played soccer with him everyday in the same spot. This, along with X and Y's passion for sports, inspired them to create Score for a Cause.

The Beginning

The first step was spreading the word. X and Y began working with a close friend to create a website for their idea. This would give people information about how to donate, where, when and the inspiration behind it. Their website, www.donatesportsequipment.com, became their main form of communication with the public. At first, Score for a Cause started with local drives in nearby places such as town sporting events, local temples and local public schools.

Quick Success

Right from the beginning, people immediately realized they had a large supply of sports equipment sitting around in their garages. Seeing the opportunity to do something good with it was the first step in Score for a Cause's success. All people had to do was deliver it to one of the boxes where collections were being held. This was pretty much easy and effortless, but went a long way in the end. As people began contacting X and Y privately, they allowed for people to drop off equipment at their house. The heavy influx of equipment to the collection boxes and their house allowed them to make a first donation pretty quickly. As seen on Score for a Cause's social media platforms, their first donation was made to a local nonprofit camp for children.
