Zainab Usman is a political economist and the director of the Africa Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C.

Education

Usman was born in Kaduna, Nigeria. She graduated from University of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with an undergraduate degree. She went on to obtain a Masters of Science from the University of Birmingham in 2011 and a Doctor of Philosophy in International Developement from the University of Oxford in 2017.

Career

In 2013, Usman began consulting for the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Department of International Development in Nigeria. Later, she began work at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford, performing researh in global economies. Beginning in 2016, Usman joined the Young Professionals Program at the World Bank before becoming a public sector specialist. While at the World Bank, her work was focused on economic policy in Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, the Republic of Congo, Serbia, Tanzania, and Uzbekistan.

In 2021, Usman became director of the Africa Program at the Carnegie Endownment for International Peace, located in Washington, D.C. Her work with the Carnegie Endowment includes economic policy, energy policy, and developing economies of Africa.

Research

Usman was a research contributor to the World Bank's flagship report on Rethinking Power Sector Reforms in Developing Countries. She has also published research with the Journal of African Affairs, the World Bank's Policy Research and Working Paper Series. Additionally, CNN, the Washington Post, and other publications have published her written commentary and featured her via broadcast.

In 2020, The Future of Work in Africa: Harnessing the Potential of Digital Technologies for All was published, with Usman as the co-editor. In June 2022, Usman's book, Economic Diversification in Nigeria: the Politics of Building a Post-Oil Economy, is scheduled to be published by Bloomsbury Press.
