Bibliography

[edit]
  • Schulze, Ludmilla. 1985. The British Journal for the History of Science. [1]
    • This section of the journal gives great detail on the facts of the Academy in its early years. Such detail is on Peter the Great's efforts when creating the academy, the academies undertakings like taking over a current affairs newspaper. Much more to come from it.
  • Thaden, Edward C. (1986). "VN Tatishchev, German Historians, and the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences". Brill, jstor.org.[2]
    • This is a peer-reviewed scientific journal so it is very reliable and uses first hand accounts. Very detailed on the beginning of the academy, especially with foreign influence and Tatishchev, a founder.
  • Usitalo, Steven A (2011). "Lomonosov: Patronage and Reputation at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences". jstor.org.[3]
    • This is a peer-reviewed scientific journal, so it should be a reliable source for a specific fact. Since it only dedicates a few sentences to the topic, it can't be used to establish notability. Mainly focuses on Lomonosov, but some useful.
  • Euler Archive. "The St. Petersburg Academy". eulerarchive.maa.org. [4]
    • Useful first hand accounts and facts from the founding of the Academy. Particularly, Euler's influence on the establishment is emphasized.
  • "Russian Academy of Sciences". The Great Soviet Encyclopedia, encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com. (1979). [5]
    • Not quite a reliable source, however it draws info from an article from a Soviet Encyclopedia so I will look into it more. Has some good info on the early years of the academy.
  • "Russian Academy of Sciences". Saint Petersburg Encyclopedia.[6]
    • Not a very formal source but it is straight from Saint Petersburg. A mess of information but looks helpful.
  • "The First Session of the Emperor Academy in St Petersburg Took Place 7 January, 1726". Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library.[7]
    • Goes in depth on the beginning of the academy from the first day it opened. Some unimportant stuff but might have some new information.
  • Schulze, Ludmilla. "The Russification of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Eighteenth Century". The British Journal for the History of Science.[8]
    • A long, peep reviewed chapter of the journal on the 18th century history of the academy. Very useful source, has a ton of information about each actor involved.
  • Gordin, Michael D. (2000)"The Importation of Being Earnest: the Early St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences". The History of Science Society.[9]
    • A peer reviewed journal entry on the history of the academy, especially in regard to the guiding philosophy of the academy and what Peter's goal was in founding.
  • Blakesley, Rosalind P. "Cultural Leadership and International Dialogue between the London and St Petersburg Academies of Art, 1757-1805" The Slavonic and East European Review.[10]
    • A unique article of correspondence between London and St Petersburg within their academies. Deals with later 18th Century in the Academy.
  • Massa-Esteve, Rosa. "The Impact of the relationship between Peter I and Leibniz on the development of science in Russia". Catalunya Polytechnic University.[11]
    • A very detailed account of the relationship between Peter I and Leibniz, a lot dealing with their ideas of education. A whole page on Leibniz's influence on the creation of the St. Petersburg Academy.
