Melantrichova street in the Old Town in Prague connects both the Na Můstku and Rytířská streets with the Old Town Square. It is named after the renowned Czech Renaissance printer and publisher, Jiří Melantrich of Aventino (c. 1511–1580).
History and names
[edit]Since its creation in the 14th century, the street has had different names:[1]
- 14th century – Junošov street, named after Jan Junoš, the owner of the house n°504, who was an advocatus in 1322.
- 15th – 17th century – Kunšova street, named after Kuneš of Bělovice, Jan Žižka's successor.
- 18th century – Schwefelgasse or Sirková, because sulfur (German: Schwefel, Czech: síra) was sold in the street.
- 1894 onwards – Melantrichova street.

- House U Košíku (At the Basket) – Melantrichova 13
- House U Zlatého rumpálu (At the Gold Winch) or U Šermířů (At the Swordsmen) – Melantrichova 14[10]
- House U Svatých Tří králů (At the Three Holy Kings), Teyfl's house – Melantrichova 15, Country Life[11] restaurant.[12]
