Obstacles is a song from British rapper CallanCMP from his debut studio album, CMP (2023). It was written at his home studio and was produced by Paxor. A chill type rap beat, the track features soft guitar melodies, a vibrant bass and vanilla type percussion. It explores the difficulties of getting past the challenges of life to enter the comfort zone.
Obstacles was released by CallanCMP as the album's twelfth and final single on December 23rd 2022. Whilst having not gained a lot of attention in the first ten months, the accompanying music video, released on October 26th 2023, gave the song wider attention and has currently amassed 200 views, making it one of his most viewed songs on YouTube ever and also becoming the first song from the album to hit that mark.
Background and release
[edit]CallanCMP was writing a lot of songs in December 2022 and was both getting beats off of YouTube and making some of his own. On December 23rd 2022, he came across a beat from Paxor entitled "Long way" and downloaded it before converting the video into an MP3. He then recorded his vocals over it using a music website called Soundtrap and put the song on his SoundCloud and YouTube accounts on the same day. The song garnered little attention as his other songs usually did and only received tens of views before the music video came out. The song was featured on the CMP album exactly 3 months later on March 23rd 2023 and appears as the seventeenth track on the album.
Music video
[edit]On October 18th 2023, CallanCMP announced that he would be dropping a music video for a song from the CMP album. The music video would turn out to be for Obstacles and was instantly premiered on his YouTube channel on October 26th 2023. It was filmed between October 23rd and October 26th 2023. It was there when the song finally garnered a bigger amount of attention, reaching 100 views in February 2024 and 200 views in December 2024.
Synopsis
[edit]The video starts with him sitting in a plane and looking at his window where it shows the island of Antigua and Barbuda. He sarcastically insults the quality of his phone as it struggles to show the island again. The plane lands and he expresses his relief of arriving "after 7 hours of waiting".
The next part shows him at his Mamora Bay villa where he is sitting on his bed, plugging in and putting on his headphones. He plays the song and he performs it throughout the video. He sings it in front of the balcony at night-time and sitting on his bed wearing only swimming shorts. The song pauses with a scene of him jumping into his swimming pool whilst screaming "Rizz 'em with the 'tism!" and the song continues playing after that. The video ends with him lying down on his bed and smiling at the camera.
Other versions
[edit]On October 5th 2024, nearly a year after the release of the music video, he released an electric guitar version. A month later, he released several remixes of Obstacles with fellow rappers B-Mallz, Jono D Boss and Cal T.
