Mediterranea (also Operation Mediterranean) is an Italian platform which brings together Italian activists, intellectuals to engage in discussion and promote action against current Italian and European migration policies. It coordinates the operation of Mare Jonio, the first Mediterranean rescue ship flying an Italian flag[1].
History
Mare Jonio set off on 3rd October 2018, the anniversary of the 2013 Lampedusa shipwreck in which over 360 people died after a 20-metre-long (66 ft) fishing boat sank off the coast of the island. Since then there have been many more shipwrecks and deaths in the Mediterranean. Italian and European policies have made the passage across the Mediterranean increasingly dangerous for asylum-seekers and have obstructed NGO ships such as Aquarius [2] and lethal while obstructing humanitarian aid efforts. As a result, migrants continue to die at sea in alarming numbers. In
