Leonardo Cruciano (Bari, 30 June 1974) is an Italian special effects artist, known for his activity in the film and television field and founder of the special and visual effects production company Makinarium, currently FX Supervisor of Baburka Factory FX.[2]

Career

[edit]

After graduating at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bari, he approached the study of cinematographic language, hyperrealism and visual perception, also studying animation, but, above all, special make-up and special effects.[1] [3] In this period he worked as a scenographer, painter, sculptor, illustrator and he started working at Cinecittà. [1] [3] Cruciano began working in national and international productions of TV series such as Roma by Michael Apted and HBOBorgia, television commercials for Fox and in several Italian and foreign films, including Rob Marshall's Nine, Miracle at St. Anna by Spike Lee, Nefertari by Hugh Hudson, Shadow by Federico Zampaglione and Imago Mortis by Stefano Bessoni. [3][4][5] [6]

In 2015 he founded the production company of special and visual effects Makinarium, with Nicola Sganga and Angelo Poggi, to create the special and visual effects of Tale of Tales by Matteo Garrone, which won two David di Donatello for Best Digital Effects and Best Makeup Effects.[7][8]

Cruciano brought the ability to integrate the various departments of effects and visual staging, in a continuous exchange of ideas between different artists, technicians and subjects.[1][3] Makinarium thus became an international reality that followed its own personal vision of realistic, concrete and at the same time pictorial effects. [1][3][9][10]

From 2015 to 2019 Leonardo Cruciano collaborated with several directors including Ridley Scott, Michael Bay, George Clooney, Paolo Sorrentino, Niccolò Ammaniti, Vlad Marsavin, Danny Boyle, and Ben Stiller. In the same years he worked on the set of films such as Tomb Raider, Ben Hur, Zoolander 2, Wonderwell, All the money in the world, Trust and Hallucinaut.[11][12][13][14]

In October 2019 Cruciano inaugurated the exhibition The Mechanics of Monsters - from Carlo Rambaldi to Makinarium, at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, curated by Claudio Libero Pisano. The exhibition traces the career of the Oscar winner, then reaching the new era of special effects, represented by Makinarium that oversaw the restoration of Rambaldi's works.[15][16]

For about two years he has collaborated on Gucci creations and performances together with the Italian fashion designer Alessandro Michele.[17][18][19]

In November 2019 Cruciano was chosen in the final five of the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Award for Best Special Make-Up Effects in a Feature-Length Motion Picture, in the Feature Length Picture - Best Special Make-Up Effects category, for 6 Underground by director Micheal Bay.[20][21]

Currently he holds the position of FX Supervisor of Baburka Factory FX, the new Italian reality of special effects linked to the independent production company Baburka Production.[22]
