kharwars are found in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Delhi, Chhattisgarh'. The community claim to have originally suryavanshi kshatriya and chero rule also trace their descent from the suryanvanshi kshatriya. They wear the janeo or caste thread but presently they not use janeo. surname used by this community are singh, mandal(specially in katihar and bhagalpur distt of bihar) ,kharwar .Due to government policy it has been put in various category.

The economic activities of the kharwar have been agriculture and wage earning.Perviously they were landlords and zamindars . But due to their extravagant nature ,they have been turned into poor.Now agriculture is the main source of their stay . kharwar have been the descendants of lanlords and zamindars.They consider themselves as attarah hazari and claim descent from the suryavanshi kshatriya.History says that Rajas of ramgarh and jashpur are members of this family. They marry in own clan(caste). But in some places of bihar they marry with khangars kshatriya(obc in bihar) as well as in his own clan(caste). In rajasthan they marry with kshatriya (rajput) like parmar , tomar etc
