Overview[edit]

Basement Systems, Inc. is a U.S. developer and distributor of basement and crawl space waterproofing and repair products installed through a franchise-like network of specialty contractors in 46 states in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.[1]

History[edit]

Starting out in 1987 as a local basement contractor, Larry Janesky founded Basement Systems, Inc. in 1990 with the goal of building a product line and a network of waterproofing contractors to install and sell the company’s products. By 2002, the company had 85 dealers and in 2016, about 345 dealers.[2] By 2013, the company's products included drainage systems, dehumidifiers, and sump pumps designed for interior basement waterproofing. Many of the products were developed and patented by Larry Janesky.[3]

In 2008, the company was named in the Tech Top 40 by the Connecticut Technology Council in the energy and environmental technology category.[4] The company has been in the Top 10 Places to Work in Connecticut in 2012 and 2015 through 2019.[5]

Janesky's approach to basement waterproofing has been featured in Bob Villa,[6] The New York Times,[7] Ron Hazelton’s show House Calls,[8] and the Department of Housing and Urban Development's The Rehab Guide.[9]

In 2019, Janesky, through an umbrella company called Contractor Nation, launched a new Basement Systems dealership in the Columbus, Ohio region, acquired a stake in a Nashville, Tennessee dealership,[10] and acquired Master Services, a Basement Systems dealer serving Tennessee, Indiana, and North Carolina.[11]

Business Model[edit]

Following a franchise-like model,[12] the company offers training, marketing services, and business support to dealers. The company's businesses include a local Basement Systems dealer serving Westchester County, NY and Connecticut, a financing company,[3] and digital marketing agency.[13]The company's business model and growth are described in The New Rules of Sales and Service in a section titled Call Larry: How One Entrepreneur's Story Defines a Company.[2] and in Tom Peters's The Excellence Dividend[14] and in Peters' writings[15], where he commends the idea of being "a superstar performer in a mundane business."[16]
