From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Satanic Temple uses the literary history of Satan, created by John Milton and Anatole France. Satan is portrayed as a benevolent being that wanted to end the ignorance of humanity, propagated by a deistic dictator and his minions. Satan is an embodiment of ideal desires to correct injustices and absurdities in the world. Like their mythological predecessor, they promote agnosticism, understanding, and a move away from obstinate organizations whom cling to outdated rituals, ideas, and promote the oppression of others.

History

[edit]

The Satanic Temple was established to be a satirical concept and an organization of people who believe that all the worlds religions deserve scrutiny. They draw from the literary image of Satan as described in The Revolt of Angels [1] and Paradise Lost [2] Lucien Greaves, one of the founders of the Temple, has attempted to organize rituals across the United States in order to prevent the misuse of Church/State laws. [3] [4]

Events

[edit]

The Satanic Temple has been featured in the news several times in its short time of operation. It perpetually attempts to challenge perceptions and misuse of legal precedents.

The Pink Mass in Mississippi
[edit]

The Pink Mass was staged in Lauderdale County, Mississippi on July 14, 2013.[5] It was held at the grave sight of the mother of Westboro Baptist Church's founder, Fred Phelps in order to formally celebrate the union of same-sex couples. The mouth of the Satanic Temple, Lucien Greaves, officiated the ceremony while two homosexual couples celebrated their relationships. The doctrine of the Satanic Temple promotes the liberty and pursuit of happiness of all people, and says that the ceremony was a promotion of love in the face of hate.

Tenets

[edit]

There are nine tenets which are at the core of the Satanic Temple. Each tenet was chosen to represent each choir of Angel sent from heaven to oversee Earth. [6]

  1. Act with understanding and reciprocate the goodwill of others within reason.
  2. The search for justice is eternal.
  3. Everyone makes mistakes. Do your best to rectify and resolve any problems that you have caused.
  4. One's body is their property to do with what they will.
  5. Facts do not have interpretations. Make sure that your beliefs are in accordance with the truth, and do not bend facts to fit beliefs.
  6. All freedoms, including the freedom to offend, are sacred. To oppress others, is to oppress yourself in an equal society.
  7. Things will always evade our understanding. Ignorance should be destroyed when possible, and all things may be learned.
  8. Lead by example, rather than coercing non-believers.
  9. These tenets were comprised to inspire noble pursuit. Good will and understanding should always be considered over words.
