Honey Hornée is a fictional character from Stephen Surjik's[1] 1993 comedy film Wayne's World 2, portrayed by American actress Kim Basinger[2][3][4]. In the film, Honey is a femme fatale who relives Garth Algar[5][6] (Dana Carvey) his pesky virginity[7]. It turns out though, that Honey has a hidden agenda[8].
Character arc
[edit]Garth meets a beautiful woman[9] named Honey Hornée (pronounced "Hor-NAY"[10]; Honey informs Garth that her surname is of French origin), at the laundromat[11] holding a box of Cheer laundry detergent[12][13]. She quickly ropes him in with her charms by running her tongue over Garth's red rope licorice[14]. She soon invites[15] Garth over for dinner[16].
When Honey arrives back with Garth at her home, she puts the move on him[17][18]. As she begins the process of seducing him by playing soft, romantic music on the stereo, Garth, who is scared and oblivious of her intentions, asks her if she has any Megadeth.
When they finally kiss each other, Garth is floating in the air. Their night of bliss also allows Garth to deliver an incisive Cary Grant imitation. This minor side story provides an opportunity for Garth to develop. Garth later says that he's no longer a stranger to the ways of women[19]. Honey is however one of the only characters Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) never encounters anytime in the film.
Honey's motivation for her bizarre attraction however, becomes increasingly clear[20] as the film continues. Eventually, it is revealed that Honey is manipulating[21] Garth into killing[22] her ex-husband[23] her estranged husband[24] with an Auto-Ordnance M1911A1 pistol[25], and Garth quickly bails on the relationship.
Development and background
[edit]Kim Basinger did three days' worth of work on Wayne's World 2. When discussing being approached to do the project, Basinger said[26] "I never saw Wayne's World so I didn't know what it was about. But Dana Carvey just clean-called me and he was very sweet and sincere. He said, "We're really going to have fun, please do this with me." At first I said no, but he kept calling. It was just a blast. Dana's wonderful. It was a little gift to be given in the middle of the year."
She said[27] when describing her character, "I'm this little character that they call Honey Hornée. ... I don't want to give away the whole plot, but I want to say that it's Garth's first screen kiss. Oh, and it's wonderful and (Dana Carvey) wrote it. He was magic for three days." And when asked whose hair was longer, hers or Garth's, Basinger said with a laugh, "You know, It was so funny, we sorta looked like each other. We're like Harold and Maude; we're kinda this odd couple. But it works. You'd just love to follow these two people around the grocery store and see what they buy and wonder what they're gonna do with it. That's the kind of characters these two are."
Basinger also said[28] when discussing working with Dana Carvey, "I honestly thought I was going to get fired because I could not keep a straight face. I never really looked into his eyes. I could never do it. I would focus on a piece of his hair and say" Be really cool Kim". And them when he started to kiss me, I just came apart."
Dana Carvey said[29] that making out with Kim Basinger was just awful. He added that he actually felt very bad for her because kissing Garth[30] is like kissing a moving truck. The guy is so nervous, he's always weaving around.
The entire subplot of Garth finding himself in the clutches of a potentially dangerous femme fatale has drawn comparisons to the 1944 film Double Indemnity[31][32][33][34] starring Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck. In that film, MacMurray plays an insurance salesman while Stanwyck plays a provocative housewife who wishes her husband were dead.
The laundromat where Garth first meets Honey Hornée was located at 6803 Melrose Avenue[35] in Los Angeles. The car that's park behind Honey as she enters the laundromat is 1975 Chevrolet Camaro[36]. Meanwhile, Honey's apartment building was located at 5023 Maytime Lane in Culver City, California. When Garth is floating in the air kissing Honey in said apartment, a black wire that's holding Dana Carvey against the background of the white lampshade is visible[37].
Legacy
[edit]Beginning in 2006, DirecTV began a series of commercials in which characters from popular movies and television shows break the fourth wall to tout the service's picture quality and the number of channels available in high definition. Instead of using CGI the original actors normally reprise their roles on recreated sets, and resulting footage is mixed with the original scenes[38]. One such ad featured Kim Basinger[39] reprising her role as Honey Hornée[40] from Wayne's World 2.
In a profile on Kim Basinger in the July 2014 issue of Flaunt, Angel Fützmania wrote[41] "I wonder if Kim Basinger waits for anyone.) It’s not Kim, I’m informed. It’s her daughter, Ireland Baldwin. My own daughter looks like me, too—but younger, of course, and less worried. Now she sits in her room where I can’t see her screen. I read on IMDb that Kim Basinger played Honey Horneé in Wayne’s World 2. (“Don’t you just love music?” Horneé asks, writhing gently to “The Girl From Ipanema.” “Do you have any Megadeth[42]?” Garth replies.) I think about my husband seeing that scene and enjoying it, a hard-on pressing gingerly into his slacks."
Reception
[edit]While Wayne’s World 2 was a disappointment at the box office compared to its 1992 predecessor, Kim Basinger’s part[43] was basically an extended cameo anyway. As previously mentioned, she only appears four scenes, and worked on the film for little more than three days. So it theoretically, wasn’t going to have much impact (positive or negative) on her career either way.
Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times wrote[44] that while there’s no doubt that Wayne’s the dominant personality in the duo, Garth, with his blond haystack hairdo and glasses, has his own frenetic moments. Especially when much to his astonishment, he finds himself vamped in the laundromat by Kim Basinger’s heavy-breathing Honey Hornée. Thomas particularly noted that the unbilled[45][46] Basinger is deliciously, outrageously funny--and hers is not the only surprise appearance.
Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune said[47] that the extended sequence between Garth and Kim Basinger as voluptuous Honey Hornée was hilarious. Especially in light of much of the sequel involving the boys' efforts to land babes, or, in the case of the uptight Garth, their efforts to land him.
Rita Kempley of the Washington Post said[48] that Kim Basinger played Honey with burlesque bump and Garth later becoming chagrined to find that she is married and wants him to shoot her husband is a ribaldry right out of a Bob Hope special.
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote[49] that one clear clue that Wayne and Garth were not nerds is that they have the inexplicable ability to attract babes. Wayne just like in the first Wayne's World film, was dating a beautiful Chinese-American rock singer named Cassandra (Tia Carrere), and before long Garth goes to the laundry and meets a lithe blonde named Honey Hornée played by Kim Basinger. Ebert also noted that the combined sexual activities of these two couples would probably not occupy three column inches altogether in the Penthouse letter column, but a lot of heat is generated, as in the scene where Honey kisses Garth for the first time, and he levitates.
Malcolm Johnson of the Hartford Courant said[50] that the appropriately named Honey Hornée was yet another bimbo role for the now penurious Kim Basinger.
Ty Burr of Entertainment Weekly considered[51] subplot[52] about a Kim Basinger's temptress seducing[53][54] Garth to be a dead end unlike a delightful Village People[55] number that seems to erupt out of nowhere.
David Nusair of Reel Film Reviews believed[56] that Wayne's World 2's downfall was triggered by a storyline that grows more and more tedious as time progresses, with the emphasis generally placed on subplots[57] that are either entirely misguided (e.g. Garth’s relationship with Kim Basinger’s sketchy Honey Hornée, Wayne’s tedious The Doors-inspired encounters with a half-naked Indian, etc.) or frustratingly familiar (e.g. Wayne worries that Cassandra is being wooed by a slick producer, in a narrative thread lifted directly from the first picture).
Janet Maslin of the New York Times felt[58] that Kim Basinger was a lot foxier than funny as the woman who does her utmost to seduce Garth.
David Theis of the Houston Press complained[59] that Garth's fling with Kim Basinger's character develops at the level of a cartoon, and then is simply dropped. After she finally makes Garth a real man, he responds with a Cary Grant imitation.
Candice Russell of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel believed[60] that what made Wayne's World 2 even funnier is when none other than Kim Basinger, of all libido-boosting actresses, puts the moves on Garth. An innocent meeting at the local laundromat turns into mutual passion of the flaming kind. Russell added that Basinger has seldom looked more provocative).
