Georgianna Agnes Brackenbury was the daughter of general Charles Booth Brackenbury (1831-1890) and Hilda Elizabeth Brackenbury (1832-1918) . She had eight siblings- Hilda, Charles, Richard, Marie, Cyril, Mary and two others. Two of her brothers died whilst serving in the army. [2] Her mother and her sister mary (1866-1946) were both also involved in militant suffrage activity.

She studied at the slade School of Fine Art from 1888-1890. [3]

Adult Life

As a member of both the National Union of Women's suffrage Societies(NUWSS) and the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU)[4], which she joined in March 1907, she took part in many marches and meetings for the sake of womens rights.

Then in Feburary 1908, after taking part in a raid on the House of Commons, was sentenced to six weeks in Holloway Prison. After she was released, she then continued to participate in militant suffrage activities. After being released from Holloway Georgiana spoke at meetings all over Britain then travelled to Germany to deliver speeches on the same topic. In 1910 she replaced Mary Gawthorpe as Womans Social Political Union Organizer in Manchester. [5]

Georgiana was also known for her skill as a portrait painter. Two of her works can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery. One of her portraits is of Emeline Pankhurst (the leader of the militant movement of women's suffereage) which was commisioned by Margaret Haig Thomas. Later on she attended Emeline Pankhurst's funeral and was the pall bearer.

Georgiana was imprisoned for a month in 1912 for smashing windows in the west end of london during a campaign. Her mother was also imprisoned for 2 weeks for the same crime.[6]
