Boaventura Monjane is a Mozambican journalist, activist, and scholar whose work bridges the worlds of academia, social movements, and media to advance agrarian and social justice. He holds a PhD in Postcolonialism and Global Citizenship (Sociology) from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Poverty, Land, and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) at the University of the Western Cape, where he continues as a Research Fellow. Monjane is also an Honorary Research Associate with Environmental Humanities South at the University of Cape Town and a Research Fellow with the International Research Group on Authoritarianism and Counter-Strategies at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (RLS).
In addition, Monjane is affiliated with the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration in Bucharest, working as part of an ERC Project on Transnational Advocacy and Corporate Accountability. He has also served as an Associate Fellow at the Centre for African Studies at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique.
Research Interests and Scholar-Activism Monjane's research and activism focus on agrarian movements, rural politics, food sovereignty, climate justice, and corporate impunity. He engages deeply with agrarian social movements locally and internationally, having collaborated with Mozambique’s National Farmers’ Union (UNAC) and the International Secretariat of La Via Campesina. His dual role as a scholar and activist allows him to combine rigorous academic inquiry with grassroots mobilization.
His scholar-activist approach is exemplified by his leadership in producing professional documentaries such as Land of Plenty, Land but a Few, Tierra en Suspenso: Amenazas y resistencias en Cabo Delgado, and We Rise for Our Land, which spotlight agrarian struggles and corporate impunity.
Editorial and Advocacy Roles Monjane serves as the editor of the Grassroots Voices section of the Journal of Peasant Studies. He previously coordinated the Southern Africa Campaign to Dismantle Corporate Power at the Alternative Information & Development Centre (AIDC) in Cape Town. Currently, he is the Solidarity Programme Officer for West Africa and Haiti at Grassroots International.
