Riots erupted throughout India in 1990 related to the Ayodhya debate. For three days starting December 7, 1990, mobs organized in Aligarh. Mostly the mobs were Hindu, and most of the anger was directed at Muslims, but the mob killed 29 Hindus and Muslims.

Response

[edit]

Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar had come to power a month previously through the Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) with the support of the Congress Party.

In response to the violence, he attempted to get Hindu fundamentalists to agree to peaceful protests at Ayodhya to the northwest of Aligarh. Calls for removal of the Babri Masjid did not cease nor did violent protests. Riot police ended the demonstrations and looting.[1]
