About me

[edit]

Hello, I am a college student in the Pacific Northwest. I am currently working to get my degree in education to become a teacher. I love to snowboard, work on vehicles, make music, and spend time with friends and family. I own a 1990 Jeep Cherokee which I built myself. It is my personal favorite 4x4 vehicle but, it also is so popularly known to off-road enthusiasts that it will forever be an important benchmark for any 4x4 vehicle[1]. I like to produce hip-hop music as a hobby, specifically sampling music. I have always loved the idea of taking old music and using it to create something totally new just as famous producers have throughout the years.

My Wikipedia interests

[edit]

I have been interested in the history of hip-hop and sampling. If I were to help edit on wikipedia articles I would look into songs, music, and artists who have been sampled and what producers today have sampled. I love dissecting new music and being able to hear how samples are made throughout the years. Various artists and producers are famously known for this such as Kanye West, J Dilla, Dr Dre, Dj Premier, and many more. Being able to learn from these famous artists helps me also grow as a producer. Their knowledge and artistic creativity can be used to help create even more music by inspired artists today.

Article Evaluation

[edit]

Intro

[edit]

I thoroughly enjoy hip hop music. I am an avid listener as well as beginner producer who specifically appreciates the art of sampling music. It's very amazing to me the way producers can use a piece of music to create something of their own. I decided to look into other artists on Wikipedia to be able to learn even more about other producers that I already listen to. I visited the Statik Selektah article on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: citations, his work in later years, and his discography.

Citations

[edit]

The first thing I noticed about the article is that in the introduction, there appears to be no citations. Notably there's no citation for the birthdate of Statik Selektah in the introduction or the body of the article. There are some good linked words to give more information such as Boston, Massachusetts, the hip hop group 1982, and American rapper Termanology. When you continue to read the body of the article you do see good citations for his Life and Career. However, when you scroll down to references, most of the links are either not up to date, no longer exist or even some that I cannot seem to load on my computer.

Work in Later Years

[edit]

Moving on from citations, the article does provide interesting details about Statik's early life and career. Continuing to read, I started to notice a lack of content as the article describes his later achievements. Something I would love to see a listener of Statik Selektah is some more information about his more recent albums and later life. There are plenty of recent articles and interviews that could be added on to give more information about his life and career such as: "Statik Selektah Discusses Balancing Life & Hip-Hop"[2] and "Statik Selektah Explains What We Have To Do To Protect Hip-Hop"[3]. Related video interview and article both from 2020 by Ambrosia for Heads, around the time Statik released his 9th studio album, The Balancing Act.

Discography

[edit]

Lastly I wanted to mention his discography in the article. The discography for Statik Selektah is very well organized. This includes all of the albums produced by Statik that I have heard and listened to and even more I have never heard of. It includes projects from his early career all the way up to his most recent project Round Trip (2023). The sub-heading organization is done well grouping studio albums, collaborative albums, mixtapes, EP's and instrumentals. Artists under the collaborative albums sectioned all are linked to separate wikipedia articles, Kota the Friend for example. Many albums are also linked to separate articles, as many that can be, and some albums are even included with citations. All of it is in chronological order and includes the years that each project released.

Conclusion

[edit]

The Statik Selektah Wikipedia article provides great information on the artist. There are definite strengths to the album such as the discography, and content that includes his early career and life. There are also some significant weaknesses such as the lack of citations and the lack of information surrounding his life and career in later and most recent years. Overall this is a good article that I think could use some more improvements to make it more clear and relevant to the artist today.
