Hi, Beyond Sleepy here, I live in the United States of America and am excited to be part of the Wikipedia community. I am a patient with a rare, invisible disability, and often misunderstood neurological disorder - one with a most unfortunate name, Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH). While classified as a sleep disorder, people with IH sleep really well and the challenge is one of wakefulness; essentially the brain is stuck in the transition between sleep and wake (and for me, GABAA receptor) related. I am also a passionate advocate (unpaid and without compensation for my efforts - actually, no longer employable and gratefully, approved for Social Security Disability). As I continue to untangle, adjust to my new normal, and redefine my purpose, I also strive to share accurate information with others -- with patients who need to know they are not alone and to provide them with access to empowering information, with our supporters, so that they might become better informed which could aid in strengthening the relationship between them and their person with hypersomnia, with the medical community because even as well trained as our physicians are, medical students only receive approximately three hours of education on sleep disorders and likely with no mention of idiopathic hypersomnia - a primary hypersomnia of central origin which includes Narcolepsy Type 1 (Narcolepsy with cataplexy), Narcolepsy Type 2 (Narcolepsy without cataplexy), and Kleine-Levin syndrome, and to those interested and the community at large because, like kindness, awareness matters. I am happy to answer questions to the best of my abilities. However, for those who may ask questions, I ask for patience and consideration because the reality of my disorder translates to having a limited and inconsistent window of daily function; plus, as I attempt to make my way, I do so with deficits in cognition, processing, and difficulty with executive functions. On a more positive note, I am told I have a good sense of humor so I guess it can be said that I am a lot of fun until I am not. So yes indeed, the patience of others goes a long way. Thanks for reading (and hopefully, learning more about Idiopathic Hypersomnia). Let the growing awareness begin and continue to expand! BeyondSleepy (talk) 05:48, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
