Berns' father is (Late) Sahr R. Lebbie,mother Fatmata Lebbie. He is born in wide extended family, but have six other siblings to his mother - Samuel, James, Solomon, Martha, Naomi and Fanta.
Berns grew up in a Christian dominated village called Canaan, in the Nimikoro Chiefdom of Kono District. In his early childhood age, Berns lived with an adopted father called Pa Daniel Tamba Gbetu. Berns started his primary school at the KDEC Primary School, Canaan village. His first primary teacher was Mr. Biango. He attended his primary school at Canaan onto class-four when the war broke out and had to continue his primary school in the decade long civil war that erruted Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2001. As an internally displaced person in Kenema town, Berns was admitted in the Holy Trinity Secondary School, where he went through his secondary school for six years - 2000 to 2006.
