Ding Yanyong (Chinese: 丁衍庸; pinyin: Dīng Yǎnyōng) is a Chinese painter and arts educator. He has been credited with bringing the aesthetics of Western art to China. Often referred to as the "Matisse of the East" and the “Modern Bada Shanren,”, Ding’s paintings merged Chinese and Western styles to achieve a harmony of the two traditions.[1][2]. Ding and fellow Guangdong artists Lin Fengmian and Guan Liang, were known as the “Three Masters of Guangdong.”[3][4]
As an art educator, Ding taught Western painting in the art academies in Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chongqing. In 1949, he moved to Hong Kong, where he continued to teach and produce art until his death in 1978. He was one of the founders of the Fine Arts Department of New Asia College in 1957, which was incorporated into the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1963.[1]
Childhood & Education
[edit]Ding was born on 15 April 1902 in Maoming, Guangdong Province (present-day Gaozhou). His name in English is Ting Yin Yung, and it is often romanized as Ting Yen-yung. His oil paintings and sketches are signed “Y. Ting” and “Y. Y. Ting”.[5]
Ting came from an affluent family. Showing talent in painting and calligraphy, Ting began his education at home with a private tutor. He later attended a primary school that was founded and funded by his father Ding Genci.[5] After graduating from high school, Ding enrolled into the Tokyo School of Fine Arts on September 1921 as one of six foreign students. During his time there, Ding was mentored by Wada Eisaku.[6]Cite error: The <ref>
