Accent discrimination, also called accentism, is unequal treatment of people based on their accent while speaking a certain language. It is frequently used to describe workplace discrimination against those with accents.

[edit]In England, accentism is often targeted at people who speak English with a Northern accent. According to studies conducted by researchers at Northumbria University, as of 2022[update], English people hold implict biases toward those with Northern accents and generally consider them to be less intelligent, less educated, and less ambitious than people with Southern accents.[1]
