About vandalism

[edit]

Vandalism in Wikipedia is any addition, removal, or change of content in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia. Vandalism has never and will never be tolerated in Wikipedia. Common examples of vandalism are page blanking, inserting of nonsense, and addition of obscenities.

Vandalism is not to be mistaken with good-faith edits. Harmful, misguided, or ill-considered edits that are not made in bad-faith are not considered vandalism. For example insertion of a controversial POV is not considered vandalism while insertion of the same kind of edit despite various warnings is considered vandalism. Whenever you are going to revert an unconstructive edit, always give careful thought as to decide whether the changes made were detrimental but well-intended, or outright vandalism.

Vandalism goes against Wikipedia's policy. Whenever you come across vandalism, revert those changes and leave a warning on the user's talk page. If a particular user continues to vandalize despite multiple warnings, that user should be reported to the Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism notice board and an WP:Administrator might block that particular vandal.

Way to spot vandalism

[edit]

A simple way to spot vandalism is via recent changes patrolling at the recent changes link located at the left of this page under the interaction tab.

Dealing with vandalism

[edit]

If you see vandalism, the easiest way is to remove it by undoing it. However, you have to be very careful because the piece of vandalism that you spotted might just be one of other vandalism. There might be other vandalism 'below' the one you spotted. One way to verify this is to click the history tab at the top of each article and check the edit history to make sure that you are reverting to a 'clean' version of the page.

You may use the undo button to revert the vandalism and mark the change as minor. Repair all the vandalism you can identify.

If it is a new article and that whole article is purely vandalism, mark it for speedy deletion by tagging it with {{Db-g3}} at the top of the page.

Gadgets you can use

[edit]

If you have done a substantial amount of reverting vandalism, you can request for the rollback feature to be enabled in your Wikipedia account. This feature is only for reverting vandalism and other obvious disruption. It lets you to see several recent edits with a single click. Go to Wikipedia:Requests for permissions to request that feature. Please note that misuse of the rollback feature might result in a removal of rollback rights.

If you are unsure if an edit can be considered as vandalism, use Twinkle instead. However, Twinkle only works on Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Camino browsers. It can also work with the latest version of the Google Chrome. Older versions of browsers and Internet Explorer does not actively support Twinkle. To activate Twinkle go to your preferences. Click into the 'Gadgets' tab. Under 'Editing Gadgets', check the box next to Twinkle and save your changes.

Warnings

[edit]

Always leave a warning at a user's talk page after reverting his/her changes. There are different levels of warnings. Below is a chart for the different levels of warnings for vandalism.

Note:This warnings are only for vandalism-related warnings.

Template Gives
{{subst:uw-vandalism1}} Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to make constructive contributions to Wikipedia, at least one of your recent edits did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and read the welcome page to learn more about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. Thank you.
{{subst:uw-vandalism2}} Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia. Your edits appear to constitute vandalism and have been reverted. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you.
{{subst:uw-vandalism3}} Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, you will be blocked from editing.
{{subst:uw-vandalism4}} This is the last warning you will receive for your disruptive edits. If you vandalize Wikipedia again, you will be blocked from editing.
{{subst:uw-vandalism4im}} This is the only warning you will receive for your disruptive edits. If you vandalize Wikipedia again, you will be blocked from editing.

Start with level 1 and then move up. If there has been previous warnings for that particular user, for example, level 1 and 2 warnings, then put a level 3 warning. Once you reach the last warning, report that user.
