About references
[edit]References are an important part of an article. They add credibility to an article, particularly to contents that is challenged or likely to be challenged, a quote from someone, contents in the biography of a living person, and when uploading an image.
Adding references
[edit]Before adding references to an article, make sure that that article has a reference section. If it doesn't, add one of the following.
==Notes==
<references />OR ==Notes==
{{Reflist}}
This will automatically produce the list of references found in the article in that section.
There are a few different ways to insert references. For your convenience, I will be teaching you the easier way.
- Click your 'my preferences' tab located at the top of this page. You will see various tabs like 'User profile', 'Appearance', 'Date and time', editing, etc. etc.
- Click 'Gadgets'.
- Scroll down to 'Editing gadgets'.
- Check 'refTools'.
- Save your changes.
This will produce a CITE button in your toolbar each time you edit an article. Click that button when you want to add a reference. This produce different citation templates. Copy+paste as many information as you can find and click 'Add citation'.
If you want to add the same citation more than once, name your reference. Use the following to add a reference again.
<ref name="name"> ... </ref>
Refer to the same reference again by adding a reference tag with the same name.
<ref name="name" />
NOTE:
- The name cannot be a number.
- The ref name need not be placed within quotes unless it contains a space or some non-ASCII characters
- Any quotation marks placed around the ref name must be straight quotes (") rather than curly quotes (“ or ”)
About categories
[edit]Categories is important in articles because it helps editors to find articles on a particular topic easily.
Adding categories
[edit]Including Category:''Name'' in an edit page will cause that article to be placed in the category Name. The link to the category will show up at in the 'Categories' box at the bottom of the page. If the link to the category Name is in red, that means that there is no such category.
Here is a list of categories.
To make categorizing easier, there is a gadget to help you. You can manually add categories but because there are over a thousand categories, remembering them is impossible.
- Click your 'my preferences' tab located at the top of this page.
- Click 'Gadgets'.
- Scroll down to 'Editing gadgets'.
- Check 'HotCat'.
- Save your changes.
