User:Beautimuss/Grasshopper mouse
Appearance
Description:
Large features - ears, eyes; size= 120-190mm long, weighing 20-50 grams
Feed:
They feed on arthropods - mainly bark scorpions (Centruroides sculpturatus). These two species demonstrate the arms race. When the scorpions sting evolves to become more toxic, the mouse evolves in order to cope with the toxins which represents coevolution. The stingers on the scorpions are modified to inject into the nerves and muscle tissues which causes disruption in the sensory system. However, grasshopper mice have an evolved sensory neurons that rejects the toxin and uses them to stop the pain signals (Rowe, Ashlee H., Matthew P. Rowe. "Predator Grasshopper Mouse".
