" In fact, in 2015, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) reported that 94% of American law enforcement agencies had implemented some sort of Facebook-related strategy." Push strategies to broadcast info, pull strategies to pull users to information and network strategies to create positive interactions. use pr strategies to create better public interactions and ideas. social media creates a great landing point for preliminary investagations providing detectives with otherwise unavaliable information the suspect shares online with less risk, money and resources included. "The most prominent social media platforms discussed were Facebook (including Facebook Live), Instagram, Myspace, Periscope, Xbox Live with Friends, and YouTube (in alphabetical order)." use social media to monitor escalation and threat assessment of individuals. unknown to the public but monitering large gathering where gang members are likely to be attending to know where to monitor when gatherings happen. "ghosting" as attractive females or accounts that then friend criminals and monitor them. heightened attention on postings flashing guns. using social media posts after the fact as evidence and to piece together crime scenes.

- looking into police trial and error of using twitter to find missing people. numerous cases of police asking for help locating people on twitter and them being round such as the case of four children in Toronto, Ontario in 2019 where police tweeted asking the community for help which was shared 300+ times and the children were located. look at " 373 tweets posted over two years (2017–2019) by 15 police agencies in Canada," police tend to focus on facebook and twitter due to the ease of like and sharing. police are building communities via social media who they can communicate with. crowdsourcing.

Police show preferences for twitter and Facebook. They use their presence on social media in order to promote an air of transparency to the public. News sources rely on official police pages for information on ongoing investigations. This gives them access to police posted mug shots and sometimes even live-streamed or pre-recorded interviews. Police use Facebook for many reasons, among them is posting mugshots and images of suspects, finding and identifying suspects to a crime, posting press releases and post status updates on arrests and investigations to the public. often times, journalist simply repurpose posts from police posts in order to gather information about an investigation.
