The war all started with an assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand from Austria. His assassination sparked a huge war taking place in Europe. This War is one of the bloodiest Wars in history. The war claimed over 16 million lives including soldiers and civilians. One of the main reasons for so many casualties is because of the trench warfare fighting style.
