Bookanakere Yediyurappa Vijayendra (born October 1, 1972) is an Indian politician and lawyer. Currently serving as the 11th State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),.[1] Karnataka, since 2023. He also serves as the Member
of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Shikaripura Assembly Constituency[2]. Vijayendra, popularly known as B.Y.V., is the second son of B.S. Yediyurappa[3], the former Chief Minister of Karnataka. He has held key positions within the party, including serving as the General Secretary and Vice President of the Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. Vijayendra is credited with playing a significant role in the formation of the BJP government in Karnataka in 2019, during his father's tenure as Chief Minister.
As State President of the BJP, B.Y. Vijayendra[4] led the "Mysuru Chalo" padayatra[5], successfully mobilizing public support against the Congress government's policies. This initiative effectively spotlighted issues of corruption and misgovernance, rallying significant attention and backing for the BJP's agenda in Karnataka[6]
EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
[edit]B.Y. Vijayendra was born on November 5, 1975, in Shikaripura, a small town in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. He is the second son of former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Late Mythradevi Yediyurappa. Vijayendra became more active in politics when his father assumed office as the Chief Minister of Karnataka for the fourth time in 2019.
He played a pivotal role in managing his father’s campaign, gaining political prominence within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His elder brother, B.Y. Raghavendra[7], is a Member of Parliament representing the Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency. Vijayendra holds a law degree from Sri Jagadguru Renukacharya College of Law, Bengaluru, which he completed in 2000.
POLITICAL CAREER MLA & STATE PRESIDENT OF BJP
[edit]Vijayendra was appointed General Secretary of the BJP State Yuva Morcha in April 2018. He toured various districts in Karnataka to strengthen the youth wing of the party, recognizing the importance of youth in political organizations. His organizational skills and focus on community engagement were pivotal during the Assembly by-elections, contributing to the BJP's victories. In the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections, Vijayendra led the BJP's campaign in the KR Pet constituency, a region traditionally dominated by Congress and JD(S). His strategic efforts resulted in a significant victory for K.C. Narayana Gowda, marking a key turning point for the BJP in a historically challenging district. Following the success in KR Pet, Vijayendra took charge of the Sira constituency's by-election in Tumkur district, where his leadership and organizational focus enabled Dr. Rajesh Gowda to achieve the largest victory margin in the constituency's history. Recognizing his accomplishments, Vijayendra was appointed State BJP Vice President[8] in 2020, where he has continued to excel in his role. Presently B.Y. Vijayendra serves as the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka, having taken on this pivotal role in 2023.
Under his leadership, he has focused on strengthening the party's grassroots connections and mobilizing support against the incumbent Congress government. Notably, he spearheaded initiatives like the "Mysuru Chalo" padayatra, which aimed to highlight local issues and galvanize public sentiment against perceived anti-people policies. Vijayendra's leadership has been characterized by extensive grassroots engagement, reflected in his travels exceeding 10,000 kilometers across Karnataka.
