Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Darkwind 05:23, Feb 21, 2005 (UTC)

== Creating Articles == Good work creating new articles. When you create things, it helps tremendously to assign them to an accurate category (see WP:CG for info). If you're really not sure about categories, at least assign your new articles a stub category (see WP:SC for info). By assigning a category, you help make sure your new articles don't get lost as 'orphans' that are not associated with related topics. Feco 06:35, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Fear not, I'm getting to it. -- 8^D BD2412gab 06:37, 2005 Apr 9 (UTC)

Neat Sig

[edit]

Thanx! I didn't want to have the usual boring signature, but I also wanted to avoid a sig that was ostentatious. I mostly just wanted to add the talk page link (and why doesn't the MediaWiki software do that automatically?), but since I was going through the trouble of editing my sig, I thought that I would at least try to be a little creative.

I'm not that happy with the green, orange, and lavender color combo, but every other choice that I tried just looked ugly, or looked like I was trying for some flag tricolour. There are two other problems that I see with it (other than the bad HTML in my original version that the MediaWiki software ignored until a fairly recent software upgrade, which then had my sig bleeding color on every talk page I had made comments on). One is that the signature does take up a lot of space when you are in Edit mode. The other is that for at least Win98 and earlier computers without upgraded fonts, the empty set symbol for my Talk page link doesn't work (it would also be true for anyone not using a Unicode-compliant browser). I could have "cheated" and used Ø (&Oslash) instead of ∅ (&#8709), but it wouldn't have been the same. BlankVerse 05:24, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

Signature snafu

[edit]

Hi, it looks like there's an unclosed bold tag in the html of your signature (the one before the "thi"), and it's messing up some pages as a consequence. You might not have noticed this before, as mediawiki's tidy function (which is occasionally turned off for performance reasons) often covers up such errors. -- John Fader (talk | contribs) 10:05, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

Re your nickname: [[User:BD2412|<font style="background: green" color=#FFC000> BD2412</font>]] [[User talk:BD2412|<font color="Blue"><b>talk</b></font>]].

This opens and <b> tags and does not close them. This messed up a view of VfD for me - I don't know why it does not do it all the time. Please fix. -- RHaworth 19:42, 2005 May 31 (UTC)

Hi again - I'd be happy to help, but be warned, I'm going to have a little less net access than normal during that week myself. Things will get cleaned, but it may take a few hours before I notice (I'm house-sitting for a friend who's off overseas for a week). Grutness...wha? 00:11, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

Need a favor

[edit]

I just spent several hours disambiguating Knopf, Alfred A. Knopf (person), Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. and Knopf Publishing Group but now I have decidedd (after seeing how the links originated) that I really need to have Alfred A. Knopf be the page for the publishing company. I would like to MOVE [[Knopf Publishing Group there but I need to have Alfred A., Knopf deleted first. I deleted the text I added and nothing no links there. CAn you delete that page for me? Thanks. Surnames

Some Wiktionarians want to delete surnames from Wiktionary. I'm opposing, on the grounds that this is a long-standing arrangement between Wiktionary and Wikipedia, where Wiktionary handles the lexicography and Wikipedia handles the people and places. Please come to Wiktionary:Wiktionary:Requests for deletion#Surnames and contribute to the discussion. Uncle G 2005-07-03 13:42:55 (UTC)

Barnstar

[edit]

Thank you very much for the barnstar, although I am not certain that I deserve it. You see, I've recently had somebody accuse me of attempting to steal credit for his work, and I want to be certain that this has nothing to do with his work. If the barnstar is being given, even in part, for the U.S. Supreme Court composition link farms at the bottom of some of the early justice biographies, such as James Wilson, then I must decline the honor. — DLJessup 6 July 2005 04:50 (UTC)

Promotional photos and fair use

[edit]

Hey, IP lawyer smartguy! Yeah, you! I've got a dilemma. My newest project on Wiki involves baseball players, and as such I've been uploading headshots of MLB players taken directly from baseball's official website – for example, Torii Hunter. It's my understanding as a moderately informed layman that Wikipedia should be able to use these images under Fair Use, and this belief is further reinforced by the wording of this template, which I have been applying to each and every image I've been uploading. (It appears to have been altered to include some stronger wording since I started using it.) Apparently, someone else is also interested in uploading photos of baseball players, but balks at my fair use claim, and insists that we use only fan-created images. He left a rather confrontational message on my talk page, and I would like some lawyerly advice before I respond to him. If the use of these images is a definite no-no or if it even falls into some sort of fuzzy legal area, I've got no problem with not using the images, but I think avoiding copyright paranoia is also important, and the inability to use these images takes some of the fun out of my little project. Your thoughtful and, dare I say it, brilliant reply is eagerly awaited. android79 04:06, August 6, 2005 (UTC)

What's your opinion on the correct license tag for Image:Benedelman-spyware-whenu-license-image011.png? The image was created as a screenshot of a copyrighted program by a third party, then used as part of a blog entry on spyware. The blog is licensed under GFDL. If the screenshot is used in the article on spyware, is it under the GFDL license of the blog, or under fair use? --Carnildo 04:55, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

If the image was posted in a GFDL blog by its original creator, then he has (perhaps unwittingly) released it thereunder. Of course, the GFDL has yet to be tested, so that is not a certain claim, but will get you off with a warning if you're wrong. If it was posted by another person, then the creator still has his full copyright claim to it, and its use here must be fair use (so long as the article uses no more of the image than is necessary to illustrate its educational point). Cheers! -- BD2412 talk 05:00, August 23, 2005 (UTC)

Human Rights Servey on Wikipedia (The final post of I_sterbinski)

[edit]
Dear all,
Wikipedia was recently a subject of intensive research of an huge international human right organization. A team of people from different nationalities and ages were acting on Wikipedia for 20 days, investigating previously noted anomalities of Wikipedia free editing and forming a final report, which (between the others similar reports) will later be a guide to all future moves of the organization concerning Wikipedia. Acting under an account of a real person, their privacy is to be held private. Therefore, very few private information will be revealed.
Also, this is a result of the lack of final possition of the organization concerning Wikipedia and human rights, which was still not formed.
The team's final post on Wikipedia, where they explain their actions can be found on the following addresses:
http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:I_sterbinski
http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Talk:Macedonia#Human_Rights_Servey_on_Wikipedia_.28The_final_post_of_I_sterbinski.29
The team would like to thank to all the persons who took part in the correspondence with us.
We also want to appologise for keeping our identity secret for a longer period.
Best regards,
Aleksandar, Biljana, Asparuh, Christos, Valjon, Michael and Ana Luiza

Hey whats going on my fine fellow florida jurist? I'm just dropping by being nosy . . . to of course ask how you did on the FL bar exam. Can you believe someone in my firm claims he got a "170" on the MBE (I don't believe him for a second). I have to wait 2 more months to get my results back from NY though.

You OK with the Hurricane and all? I got back to the Gables after 2 weeks abroad and oh my god, half the trees on my property were shattered, debris everywhere. I was pretty cranked off but then again, it was nothing compared to what that storm did to New Orleans a few days after it hit our "tropical paradise."

Well, I hope things are going well, good luck on your career! Rainbowwarrior1977 00:07, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
